Saliba Faces Lengthy Lay-Off After Back Surgery

Arsenal have been dealt a major blow with William Saliba facing back surgery that is expected to rule him out for four to five months, according to reports from L'Équipe and The Athletic.

The France defender, a cornerstone of Mikel Arteta’s back line, has been struggling with the issue throughout the summer and was forced off in the Euro semi-final against Spain because of severe discomfort. That substitution, initially viewed as precautionary, now looks like the moment the problem finally caught up with him.

French journalist Julien Laurens reported that during the game Saliba told those around him his back was “completely done for”. He had already been playing through the pain, allegedly relying on strong painkillers to stay on the pitch for club and country. The gamble has ended with the outcome every defender dreads: time on the operating table.

The operation will sideline him deep into the season. A four-to-five-month recovery window means Arsenal are unlikely to see Saliba in competitive action again before the turn of the year, with a realistic return not expected until 2027.

For a player who has become the defensive reference point at the Emirates, it is a brutal interruption. For Arsenal, it raises a sharp question: who holds the line now that their leader at the back is gone for almost half a season?
