Müller Urges Bayern to Sign Rising Star Johan Manzambi
Thomas Müller has seen enough. From Los Angeles to Bavaria, one name is now lodged firmly in his mind: Johan Manzambi.
The Bayern Munich legend is openly urging his former club to move for the Switzerland midfielder, whose star is rising just as Europe’s biggest sides sharpen their summer plans. Manchester United are circling. Others too. Müller wants Bayern to get there first.
Manzambi’s World Cup statement
On Thursday in LA, in front of a packed SoFi Stadium, Manzambi stepped off the bench and changed the tempo of Switzerland’s World Cup opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina. He didn’t just catch the eye. He finished the game with two goals in a 4-1 win and the feeling that a new headline act had arrived on the biggest stage.
For the 20-year-old, it was a career milestone.
“Honestly, it’s incredible, it’s the first brace of my career, and at the World Cup on top of that,” he said afterwards. “Scoring two goals in front of the fans and my family, that’s very, very nice. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight.”
Clubs across Europe were already watching. That performance simply turned the volume up.
United’s midfield rebuild meets a new rival
Manchester United’s need in midfield is no secret. Casemiro has gone. Manuel Ugarte is expected to follow. The club have already lined up £35million man Ederson Silva for Old Trafford and are still pushing to reshape Michael Carrick’s engine room.
They are in the race for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes despite Tottenham’s interest. They are monitoring Real Madrid’s stance on Aurelien Tchouameni, with the Spanish giants now understood to be softening their position on a sale that would also tempt Liverpool. Reports in Italy have linked United with Croatia and Como talent Martin Baturina, who announced himself with a goal against England in his World Cup opener.
Amid all that, Manzambi is no longer just a name on a scouting report. TEAMtalk sources have already confirmed United have tracked him, and their interest dates back months, alongside Arsenal’s.
The timing of his World Cup brace could hardly be more awkward for United. Just as they intensify their search, a Bayern great is effectively planting the Bavarian flag on the player.
Müller’s message to Bayern
Müller, who collected 33 trophies in Bayern colours and knows what a Bayern midfielder must look like, did not hide his admiration after watching Manzambi again.
“He’s a good player overall. We’ve had him on our list for a while now,” he told MagentaTV. “For me, he’s someone, and now we can make a headline, that FC Bayern should also consider.
“You can sense his flexibility. You can also sense his carefree attitude. At the same time, you can already see a certain maturity in his actions, in his decision-making, his work ethic.
“He’s now in Freiburg in a team where they really work hard. I think his development is very, very good.
“He’s a player who can play as No.6, he can play as No.8, he can play as No.10. He wears number nine on his back, so maybe we could also market him as a striker!”
That blend of positions is exactly what makes Manzambi so attractive. At Freiburg last season he was one of the Bundesliga side’s standout performers, finishing the campaign with five goals and four assists. He pressed, he carried the ball, he created, he scored. Coaches love that kind of versatility. Sporting directors too.
Bayern, United and a race that’s just begun
Bayern’s summer plans are already aggressive, with a sensational £95.1m double move reported to be close and the club looking to refresh a squad that has lost its grip on domestic dominance. Manzambi would fit a new profile: younger legs, high work rate, tactical flexibility.
United, meanwhile, are trying to rebuild a midfield that has too often looked heavy and predictable. Manzambi’s energy and freedom between the lines would answer several questions at once. Arsenal’s long-standing interest only adds another layer of competition.
For now, the facts are simple. A 20-year-old from Freiburg has just scored twice at a World Cup in front of his family in Los Angeles. His league numbers already match the promise on the international stage. Manchester United have scouted him. Arsenal like him. Bayern Munich’s most decorated modern icon is publicly pushing his old club to act.
If Bayern listen to Müller, Manzambi’s next step could be into the Allianz Arena. If they hesitate, Old Trafford – or another European giant – will be ready to pounce.
