Manchester United Target João Fernandes and Midfield Overhaul

Manchester United are preparing to make their move for West Ham’s young midfielder João Fernandes, with the club’s relegation from the Premier League opening a window of opportunity that United do not want to miss.

United intend to contact West Ham soon to formalise their interest in the 21-year-old, who has climbed quickly up their shortlist as they work on plans to bring in three midfielders this summer. Inside Old Trafford, Fernandes is now viewed as a serious option rather than a speculative name.

United believe the Portugal youth international is likely to be available and are trying to establish the conditions of any deal. Their internal valuation sits around the £50 million mark. The question now is whether West Ham, under pressure after dropping out of the top flight, can be brought to the table at that price.

West Ham, for their part, are expected to resist a straightforward sale. Figures close to the London club anticipate an attempt to draw more suitors into the race, aiming to trigger a bidding war and push the fee well beyond United’s preferred range. Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have already been credibly linked, and West Ham are unlikely to ignore that leverage.

Ederson deal sets the template

United’s interest in Fernandes runs alongside advanced work on a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson. An early summer agreement for the Brazilian is now seen as increasingly likely, with a fee below £35 million viewed as realistic by those close to the negotiations.

That prospective price has become a reference point inside United. The club see the Ederson talks as the model for their entire window: smart, opportunistic deals that land prime targets without being dragged into inflated auctions.

That mindset is already shaping their stance on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. United remain admirers of the midfielder, but Brighton’s £100 million valuation sits miles from what Old Trafford decision-makers consider acceptable. Unless that figure softens, United are prepared to walk away rather than shatter their wage and fee structure for a single player.

As things stand, there has been little sign of Brighton backing down. With the summer window edging closer, United are increasingly open to turning towards targets they deem more attainable.

Alternative midfield options on the radar

Behind Fernandes, Ederson and Baleba, United have drawn up a broader pool of options. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is one name that has gained traction, his technical profile and age fitting the club’s medium-term rebuild.

Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali also features on the list, though any move would be complicated by his situation and would hinge entirely on price and availability. Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni is admired at the very top of the club, but prising him away from the Bernabéu would require a major shift in Madrid’s stance or a dramatic change in the market.

For now, these remain live but conditional opportunities rather than active pursuits. The pattern is clear: United want choice, but they want value even more.

Rashford uncertainty stalls left-sided plans

While the midfield picture begins to sharpen, United’s plans in attack are stuck in a holding pattern. The club are considering delaying any move for a left-sided forward until Marcus Rashford’s future becomes clearer.

Rashford’s situation is delicately poised. Anthony Gordon’s pending move to Barcelona has muddied the waters, leaving Rashford’s own prospects at Camp Nou uncertain. Even so, there is still hope on the player’s side that a permanent switch to Barca could yet materialise.

Barcelona’s interest has not disappeared, but everything rests on the financial mechanics of such a deal. If the numbers do not work, United will be left with a major decision: reintegrate a homegrown star whose form and role have been under intense scrutiny, or reopen the door to a new left-sided signing late in the window.

United want three midfielders, a cleaner wage bill and no more panic buys. They also know that one big sale, or one hard-line stance from a selling club, can flip the script on an entire summer.
