Manchester City Targets 16-Year-Old Eichhorn Amidst European Rivalry
A 16-year-old defensive midfielder from Hertha BSC has turned into the latest flashpoint of Europe’s talent war – and Manchester City are trying to steal a march.
City are set to sign Eichhorn but have no intention of keeping him in Manchester straight away. The plan is clear: secure the player, then send him on loan for immediate senior minutes. Bayer 04 Leverkusen have emerged as a leading option, a move that would drop him straight into the Bundesliga’s high-intensity rhythm without the glare of the Premier League spotlight.
It would not, however, take him to the two German giants who have been hovering for months.
Dortmund push, but doubts over playing style
Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have both been tracking Eichhorn closely and still believe they can turn the race in their favour in the next transfer window.
Dortmund, especially, have been painted as the likeliest destination. Reports in Bild describe the Black and Yellows as having “the best chance” of landing his signature, with a meeting between sporting director Ole Book and the teenager seen as a decisive moment in their pursuit.
Yet the story is not that straightforward.
Sport Bild reports that Eichhorn is not fully sold on BVB’s current football under Niko Kovac. The style, the structure, the way the midfield functions – it has not completely convinced him. His preference, according to those reports, leans towards Bayer Leverkusen or RB Leipzig, two clubs with reputations for dynamic, front-foot football and clear development pathways for young talents.
So while Dortmund push, the player’s own vision for his career could still pull him elsewhere.
Bayern admire, but argue
At Bayern, the picture is more conflicted.
There is no shortage of admiration for Eichhorn’s ability. His profile fits the modern game: a defensive midfielder with composure, range and room to grow. Yet kicker reports internal disagreement at the club over whether to move for the 21-year-old, despite that widespread appreciation.
The talent is not in question. The timing, the squad balance, the investment – those are.
In a market where Bayern usually move with cold clarity, the hesitation stands out.
Hertha’s last play
Back in Berlin, Hertha BSC are trying to squeeze one more year out of their prodigy.
The club have not completely given up on keeping Eichhorn for another season. As Bild outlines, the plan on the table is to trigger a delayed exit: sell him next summer via a €12 million release clause, then immediately bring him back on loan for an extra campaign.
It is a compromise. Hertha bank a guaranteed fee, the player steps onto a bigger stage soon enough, and the club still benefit from his presence in the short term.
Whether that idea survives the pressure from Manchester, Leverkusen, Dortmund, Leipzig and Bayern is another matter entirely.
For now, the equation is stark: a 16-year-old defensive midfielder, a €12 million pathway out, and a cluster of Europe’s sharpest operators trying to shape the first major decision of his career.
