Ferland Mendy Undergoes Surgery for Injury Recovery
Ferland Mendy’s season of frustration has moved from the pitch to the operating table – but not, it seems, to the brink of retirement.
The Real Madrid left-back underwent surgery on Monday in Lyon after suffering yet another recurrence of a muscular problem in his right thigh, an injury that has stalked him throughout the campaign. The operation, performed at the Jean-Mermoz private hospital by renowned specialist Dr. Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet and overseen by Madrid’s own medical staff, was completed successfully, the club confirmed.
This was not a routine clean-up. Surgeons specifically targeted the rectus femoris in his right leg, the same area that has repeatedly broken down and shredded any hope of continuity. The latest setback came on May 3 against Espanyol, when Mendy’s night ended after just 14 minutes. One sprint, one pull, and another grim walk down the tunnel. It was his fifth injury of a turbulent season, and yet another interruption to his battle to hold down the left-back spot.
In an official statement, the club said: “Our player Ferland Mendy underwent successful surgery today, under the supervision of the Real Madrid Medical Services, to repair a rectus femoris muscle injury in his right leg. Mendy will begin his rehabilitation in the coming days.”
That message carried more weight than usual because of what had come before it. In the build-up to the operation, several Spanish outlets painted a bleak picture, suggesting the defender could be facing as long as a year out. Some went further, floating the idea that this could be a career-threatening problem for the 30-year-old.
Those whispers have been firmly pushed back. According to RMC Sport, Mendy has no intention of walking away from the game and remains fully focused on returning to the highest level. Retirement talk has been shelved. The fightback is the only plan.
The injuries have already taken a toll beyond Madrid. Mendy, capped 10 times by France, has not played for Les Bleus since Euro 2024, a tournament in which he did not feature. For a player once tipped to be a long-term fixture in the national team, the stop-start nature of his club career has inevitably damaged his international standing.
This time, though, the medical outlook is more optimistic than the doom-laden early reports. Initial expectations put his absence at around three to four months as he embarks on a structured rehabilitation programme. If there are no setbacks, Mendy could be back during the first half of next season.
For Real Madrid, that timeline matters. The left side of their defence has felt his absences acutely, and the club must decide how heavily to lean on him once he returns. For Mendy, it is even more stark: this next stretch of fitness may define his future at the Bernabéu and with France.
The surgery in Lyon closes one chapter of a long-running saga. The next one, written in the gym and on the training pitches, will decide whether Ferland Mendy can still reclaim the shirt he has spent all season watching from the stands.
