Laois vs London: Tailteann Cup Round 2A Preview
Laois will cross the Irish Sea next as the Tailteann Cup flung up a compelling Round 2A pairing with London in Monday’s draw.
Justin McNulty’s side arrive there with momentum. They put 1-23 on Wicklow at the weekend, a statement win that doubled as a personal triumph for the Laois boss over his former Armagh team-mate Oisín McConville. Now they face a London outfit that produced the most explosive half of the round, hitting four first-half goals as they dismantled Waterford on Sunday.
One team riding a wave. The other fresh from a rout. London v Laois suddenly looks like one of the ties of the round.
Offaly earn home tie as Down and Leitrim face double jeopardy
Offaly’s reward for their impressive victory over Clare is a home fixture, but they must wait to discover their visitors. The Faithful County will host the winner of Down v Leitrim in Round 2A.
Conor Laverty’s Down welcome Leitrim, managed by fellow Mourne man Steven Poacher, to Newry on Saturday evening. There is plenty at stake. The winner heads for Tullamore and a shot at the quarter-final places; the loser is not finished, but the safety net is thin.
Whoever comes up short in Páirc Esler will drop into Round 2B, where they will have home advantage against Carlow in a last-chance fixture. Survive, and the campaign lives on. Lose again, and it’s over.
Antrim’s goal glut meets Tipp resilience
Antrim posted the most eye-catching scoreline of Round 1: 6-17 against Carlow. Six goals, yet only three points to spare after extra-time. It was chaotic, breathless, and it underlined both their attacking threat and their vulnerability.
Mark Doran’s Saffrons now meet a Tipperary side who showed a different kind of steel. Tipp had to withstand a late Sligo surge to book their place in Round 2A, hanging on when the game seemed to be slipping away.
Firepower against resilience. Antrim v Tipperary has the feel of a game that could swing wildly in either direction.
Fermanagh welcome Wexford to Brewster Park
The final Round 2A tie sends Division 3 finalists Wexford north to Brewster Park to take on Fermanagh.
Home soil in Enniskillen is no small advantage at this stage, especially against a Wexford team that arrives with the confidence of a strong league campaign and a convincing first-round Tailteann Cup win over Limerick.
For both, this is a clear opportunity. Win, and the path towards the business end of the competition sharpens into view.
Round 2B: last-chance saloon
Round 2B offers no such comfort. Lose here and the Tailteann Cup journey ends.
Clare, beaten 1-17 to 1-14 by Offaly in Ennis, stay at home and will again rely on Cusack Park as they welcome Longford. The margin against Offaly was narrow enough to sting; how they respond will define their summer.
Wicklow, well beaten by Laois, must pick themselves up quickly. They host Limerick in Aughrim, with both counties smarting from heavy defeats. Limerick were outgunned by Wexford in Round 1, and now travel knowing there is no room left for error.
Waterford, hammered by London’s four-goal first half, get another crack at home when Sligo come to town. Sligo’s late charge against Tipperary fell just short; they will not want to leave it so late again.
The final Round 2B pairing will feature the loser of Down v Leitrim at home to Carlow. Carlow, who somehow conceded 6-17 to Antrim yet still dragged that tie to extra-time, know they can trouble teams. The question is whether they can tighten up enough at the back to stay alive.
Fixtures, format and what comes next
The first team named in each tie has home advantage, with all Round 2A and 2B fixtures scheduled across 23 and 24 May.
New York will not feature until the preliminary quarter-final stage, entering the competition later as the Tailteann Cup field begins to narrow and the stakes rise.
By then, the drama of these Round 2 ties will have done its work. Some counties will be building belief. Others will be left to wonder how a summer slipped away so quickly.
