Ferland Mendy Faces Months Out After Surgery for Thigh Injury
Ferland Mendy’s season has been cut open on the operating table. The Real Madrid left-back underwent surgery on Monday in Lyon to repair a recurring injury to his right thigh, a problem serious enough that some inside the game feared it could end his career.
The procedure went well, according to a medical source, and for now the outlook is cautiously optimistic. Mendy is expected to be sidelined for three to four months, a far more encouraging timeline than the year-long absence that had been whispered about in recent days.
The injury flared again during a La Liga match on May 3, the latest in a punishing sequence of physical setbacks. This is his fifth injury of the season, a brutal run for a player whose game relies on explosiveness and relentless running down the flank.
For Mendy, 30, it is another harsh twist in a career that has already demanded resilience. The Frenchman came through the Paris Saint-Germain youth system before building his reputation at Le Havre and then Lyon, earning his move to Real Madrid and breaking into the France national team.
Between 2018 and 2024 he collected 10 caps for Les Bleus, enough to prove he belonged at the highest level, but not enough to escape the feeling that injuries have repeatedly stalled his momentum.
Now, as he begins another rehabilitation, the question is no longer just when he returns for Real Madrid, but how much of the old Ferland Mendy will be waiting on the other side of these three to four months.
