Benfica Target Marco Silva as Mourinho Replacement Amid Madrid Talks
Benfica are bracing for the possibility of losing José Mourinho to Real Madrid and have identified Fulham’s Marco Silva as their leading candidate to step in if the Portuguese coach walks away from Lisbon.
Mourinho, 63, is Madrid’s preferred choice to take over at the Bernabéu, with discussions already held over a dramatic return for the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager. Thirteen years after his first spell in the Spanish capital ended, the door has swung open again.
Benfica, who brought Mourinho back to the club last September, have no desire to see him leave so soon. He remains central to their plans and to their attempt to reel in Porto at the top of Portuguese football. But the hierarchy know they cannot ignore Madrid’s pull and are putting a contingency plan in place.
That plan leads directly to Marco Silva.
Silva at a crossroads
Fulham have moved to keep their head coach. A new contract is on the table, a clear statement that the club want the 48-year-old to continue the project he started by hauling them back into the Premier League in 2022 and then stabilising them in mid-table.
The problem for Fulham is that Silva has yet to commit. He has restored the club’s top-flight status and made them hard to shift, but repeated attempts to turn that into a sustained push for Europe have faltered. For a coach with his reputation and ambition, the question is obvious: what comes next?
Benfica offer one powerful answer. The Lisbon giants sit second to Porto and can realistically promise regular Champions League football. For a Portuguese coach who has built his name in England, the chance to return home and lead a club of that stature on Europe’s main stage is a serious temptation.
Chelsea watching the same man
Silva’s situation is being watched closely in west London as well. Chelsea have placed him on their shortlist as they search for a replacement for Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed last month.
Chelsea are in no rush. They are prepared to let the season run its course before making a final call on the dugout. Inside the club, another name stands above the rest: Xabi Alonso.
Alonso, who delivered the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen in 2024, has been out of work since his own dismissal by Real Madrid this season. Despite that abrupt end, his stock remains high. Chelsea have tracked him for at least three years and view him as the ideal fit for their next era.
The Spaniard is understood to favour a move to England for his next role. That stance has not gone unnoticed. Liverpool have been repeatedly mentioned as a possible destination should they decide to part company with Arne Slot.
For now, the dominoes stand. Madrid circle Mourinho. Benfica prepare to pivot to Silva. Chelsea weigh Silva against Alonso. One decision at the Bernabéu could set the entire managerial market in motion.
