Newcastle Join Felix Nmecha Chase as Premier League Giants Circle
Felix Nmecha’s future at Borussia Dortmund is starting to feel like one of this window’s slow-burn sagas, and Newcastle United have now stepped into the frame.
The 25-year-old Germany international has been on the radar of several Premier League heavyweights for weeks, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool all tracking his situation. Now, according to Sky Sports, Newcastle have joined the queue – and they are not arriving late to the party by accident.
Eddie Howe is said to be a long-term admirer of Nmecha. Newcastle looked at him seriously back in 2023, weighing up a move before choosing Sandro Tonali from AC Milan instead. That decision shaped their midfield rebuild. It did not end Howe’s interest.
Now the door has opened again. Nmecha’s role at Dortmund and the growing attention from England’s elite have combined to put his name back on recruitment lists across the Premier League. Newcastle, under pressure to refresh and deepen their midfield options, see an opportunity to correct what some at the club may view as unfinished business.
There is a catch. A big one.
Sky Sports report that Nmecha’s contract with Borussia Dortmund includes an €85 million release clause.
For a central midfielder who is admired for his blend of physical presence and technical range, that figure instantly places him in the bracket of major, statement signings – the kind Newcastle have so far approached with caution under their current regime.
The situation is complicated further by conflicting information from Germany. Reports there insist there is no active release clause in Nmecha’s deal until 2027, casting doubt on how straightforward any move would actually be. If that version is correct, Dortmund would hold a far stronger hand in negotiations, and any buying club would have to test their resolve the traditional way: with a bid big enough to make them blink.
For now, the picture is clear only on one front. Nmecha has serious admirers in England, and the list is growing. Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool have already been linked. Newcastle have now stepped into that conversation, this time with Howe’s long-standing interest as a driving force.
Whether the Magpies are prepared to push towards the kind of fee being discussed will reveal plenty about their ambitions – and about how highly they really rate Felix Nmecha in the next phase of their project.
