Mason Greenwood's Potential Move to Fenerbahce Could Boost Manchester United

Manchester United will be watching the next chapter of Mason Greenwood’s career with unusual interest – and not just for footballing reasons.

The academy graduate, who left Old Trafford for Marseille in 2024, is at the centre of a developing transfer story that could hand United a significant financial lift. Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi has claimed the Turkish giants have reached an agreement with Greenwood over a four-year deal, a move that would trigger a lucrative sell-on clause for his former club.

Greenwood’s revival in France

Greenwood has rebuilt his career in Ligue 1. Sixteen goals. Seven assists. Thirty-two league appearances. Those are the numbers that have put him back on the radar of Europe’s leading clubs.

Operating as a forward for Marseille, the 24-year-old has shown the kind of end product that once made him one of United’s brightest prospects. His form has drawn admiring glances from Roma, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus, with all four clubs linked as potential suitors ahead of the summer window.

Yet Marseille’s failure to qualify for the Champions League has changed the landscape. Greenwood is widely expected to move on, and that is where United’s interest sharpens.

When they sanctioned his £26 million switch to the Stade Vélodrome, United inserted a substantial 40 per cent sell-on clause. Any sizeable fee now would not just reshape Marseille’s summer plans; it would also drop a sizeable sum back into the coffers at Old Trafford.

Fenerbahce make their move

The strongest noise right now is coming from Istanbul.

Hakan Safi, a candidate in Fenerbahce’s presidential race, has gone public with a bold claim: personal terms with Greenwood are already in place.

“We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood,” Safi said, outlining his vision for the club. He described Greenwood as a player who has “proven himself at the highest level of European football” and insisted the forward had chosen to join Fenerbahce for the “most valuable and productive years of his career”.

Safi framed the deal as the fulfilment of a campaign promise. “I said I would bring a star player. Today, I am experiencing the justified pride of keeping my promise.”

Those are strong words, and they crank up the pressure on Fenerbahce to now strike a deal with Marseille.

The numbers that matter to United

Personal terms may be in place, but this transfer will be decided by the fee.

Reports in France suggest Marseille want around £47.5 million for Greenwood. If that valuation is met, United’s 40 per cent sell-on clause becomes hugely significant. On that figure, the Premier League club would bank roughly £19 million without lifting a finger in the market.

For United, operating under tighter financial controls and looking to reshape their squad, that kind of windfall could influence their own summer business. For Marseille, it is a test of how far they can push the price for a player who has become one of their key attacking figures.

Marseille weigh up their options

Inside Marseille, Greenwood’s situation is being handled with care.

Sporting director Gregory Lorenzi, speaking to L’Equipe, made it clear the club are actively considering what comes next.

“He [Greenwood] is one of the players that we are really thinking about [with regard to] their future. If an opportunity presents itself, naturally, we will think about it,” Lorenzi said.

“But there is the club's position [and] that of the player. It is also up to us to manage internally to find the best possible solution for all parties.”

That is the balance Marseille must strike: maximise value, respect the player’s wishes, and keep the squad competitive. All while knowing that a sizeable chunk of any fee will head straight back to Manchester.

For Greenwood, the decision now looms large. Stay in France, push for a move to one of Europe’s traditional heavyweights, or become the centrepiece of an ambitious project in Istanbul? Whatever he chooses, the ripple will be felt all the way back at Old Trafford.
