Ben Godfrey Joins Rangers: A New Chapter in His Career

Ben Godfrey’s long road from York City prospect to seasoned Premier League defender has taken another sharp turn, this time towards Glasgow – and a season that could redefine his career.

The 28-year-old has joined Rangers ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, with the club holding an option to make the move permanent next summer. For a player who has already ticked off England caps, top-flight football in two countries and a promotion campaign on his CV, this is no late detour. It looks like a deliberate push into the heart of a title fight.

Godfrey arrives with the kind of background that immediately commands respect in a dressing room. Raised at his hometown club York City, he fought his way through the lower-league grind before stepping into the Norwich City academy. By 2018/19 he had forced the door open at Carrow Road, becoming a first-team regular and anchoring a Canaries side that surged to promotion to the Premier League. That season marked him out as more than just another academy graduate; he became a cornerstone.

The reward came swiftly. In the summer of 2020, Everton moved for him, and Godfrey was thrown straight into one of English football’s most volatile fixtures, making his debut in a 2-2 Merseyside derby. It was a baptism under floodlights and pressure, the kind of stage that either exposes or confirms a defender. He stuck around long enough to rack up more than 100 Premier League appearances, a tally that tells its own story about reliability at the highest level.

His path then bent towards Italy. In 2024, he joined Atalanta, stepping into the tactical intensity of Serie A. The move underlined how highly his versatility and athleticism were rated beyond England. The second half of last season took him north again, this time to Denmark and a loan spell with Brøndby in the Superliga, adding another style of football – and another culture – to a career already rich in variety.

Now comes Rangers, and the tone from Godfrey on arrival is clear. “I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here. I know the size of the club so it is a massive honour to be wearing the shirt this season, and I can’t wait to get started,” he said, laying out the blend of excitement and responsibility that comes with the move. This isn’t a player looking for a quiet landing spot. “I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times.”

Rangers are banking on exactly that. In Derek McInnes, Godfrey finds a manager who has wanted hardened operators, not projects, at the core of his squad. McInnes made no attempt to play down the significance of the signing.

“Ben is a player who has competed at a very high level throughout his career. He’s played in the Premier League, been involved with England, and brings a lot of experience with him,” the manager said, drawing a straight line between Godfrey’s past and what he expects in Glasgow. “He’s a strong, athletic defender with good qualities both on and off the ball, and we believe he can add a lot to the squad. We’re pleased to get him in, and I’m looking forward to working with him in the season ahead.”

That description fits the profile Rangers have been crying out for: power and pace at the back, comfort in possession, and the mentality of someone who has lived through promotion chases, relegation scraps and European ambitions. Godfrey has seen all of that. He has done it in different leagues, different systems, under very different types of pressure.

The deal, initially short-term with the option to buy, gives Rangers flexibility. It gives Godfrey something else: a stage. A season in Glasgow offers the chance to become more than a squad name on a team sheet; it offers the chance to be central to a campaign defined by trophies, derbies and expectation.

He has worn the shirts of York, Norwich, Everton, Atalanta and Brøndby. Now he pulls on Rangers blue, with a clear challenge in front of him: can all that experience be turned into the kind of dominance that delivers the silverware he insists this club deserves?
