Manchester United Eyes Aurelien Tchouameni for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s pursuit of Aurelien Tchouameni has moved a step closer, with wage demands no longer seen as a barrier – and Chelsea’s own midfield saga potentially opening the door.

United have identified the Real Madrid man as their ideal successor to Casemiro as part of a sweeping midfield rebuild. A £35million deal for Atalanta’s Ederson is already in place, but that is only the start. With Mateus Fernandes now leaning towards Tottenham, the Old Trafford hierarchy are preparing for a busy summer in the middle of the pitch.

The plan is bold. Up to three midfielders could arrive before next season, a reshaping designed to hand Michael Carrick a group capable of competing with the very best in Europe. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott has emerged as an alternative to West Ham’s Fernandes, while Tchouameni and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba are being lined up for the specialist No 6 role.

On Monday, Fabrizio Romano underlined what many inside the game already knew: Tchouameni is a major target for United. The concern, he warned, lay in the size of the Frenchman’s salary at the Bernabeu.

That concern has not lasted long.

“Tchouameni’s wages are not an issue in my opinion,” he told The United Stand. “Manchester United would be prepared to make a player like that one of their top earners.

“They’re not in that territory of £300,000 [per week] Rashford, Sancho-type wages, but nor is Tchouameni by the way.

“So I’m not aware that personal terms with Tchouameni would be a problem.”

The real complication, Jacobs argued, sits in Madrid – and in west London.

Real Madrid must decide which midfielder to bring in next, and what that means for their existing core. The European champions are weighing up how to fund another big move, and that is where Enzo Fernandez comes into the picture.

“The challenge is, what midfielder do Real sign? Is it in Tchouameni’s position? Even if it isn’t, do they bring in enough funds elsewhere, or do they need one big sale to make a play at Enzo Fernandez?” Jacobs said.

“Jose Mourinho has said he wants Enzo Fernandez, and this is why talks are expected to begin between Chelsea and Real Madrid.

“So I doubt Man Utd would be walking away from a prospective Tchouameni deal [based] on wages.

“I think they would hold some optimism that if the player genuinely becomes available, it’s a viable move.”

Madrid, for their part, are confident about landing Fernandez, a stance that could send ripples through the market. If Chelsea open the door for Enzo to leave, Madrid may need to sacrifice a major asset. Tchouameni immediately becomes the obvious candidate.

That scenario would not only encourage United. Liverpool, long-time admirers of the Frenchman, would also sense an opportunity.

United know the scale of the commitment required. A fee in the region of £70m will be needed to tempt Madrid, but for a player widely regarded as one of the elite defensive midfielders in world football, the numbers look less like a gamble and more like a statement.

If Madrid push ahead for Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea play ball, the dominoes are lined up. The question now is whether United move quickly enough to catch Tchouameni before someone else does.
