Liverpool's Summer Overhaul: New Manager and Key Transfers

Liverpool are bracing for a summer of upheaval. A new manager, a reshaped dressing room, and a transfer market that could define the next era at Anfield.

Andoni Iraola is expected to be confirmed as Liverpool’s next head coach this week, replacing Arne Slot and ushering in a very different chapter on Merseyside. The club is not waiting for the ink to dry before moving. The rebuild has already started.

A New Bench, A New Dressing Room

The scale of change is stark. Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konaté – three of the loudest voices and most recognisable figures in the squad – have gone. That is not just talent out of the door; it is leadership, personality, and a huge chunk of Liverpool’s identity.

On the pitch, the spine is already being reinforced. Jeremy Jacquet will finally arrive this summer after Liverpool struck a £60m deal for the centre-back back in January. At left-back, the picture is less settled. Milos Kerkez and Kostas Tsimikas are the options on the table, but neither comes with the certainty or aura of Robertson at his peak.

Up front, the issues are even more urgent.

Salah’s exit has ripped a hole in Liverpool’s attack. Hugo Ekitike’s ruptured Achilles, which is expected to keep him out until 2027, strips away another option. The 2025-26 campaign looms with serious doubts over the reliability of club-record signing Alexander Isak’s fitness. For a club that has built its recent history on relentless firepower, the depth and quality in the forward line suddenly look fragile.

That is where Yan Diomande comes in.

Diomande Says Yes – Now It’s Over to Liverpool

According to French journalist Santi Aouna, posting on X, RB Leipzig’s teenage sensation Yan Diomande has already given the green light to a move to Liverpool. He has also approved a potential switch to Paris Saint-Germain, setting up a straight fight between two European heavyweights when the window officially opens on June 15.

For Liverpool, Diomande is not just another name on a shortlist. He is their number one target to step into the void Salah has left on the right. At just 19, he has forced his way into the spotlight with a breakout season in the Bundesliga, finishing the campaign with 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances for Leipzig.

Those numbers are not empty. They speak of a winger with end product, explosiveness and the kind of ceiling Liverpool’s recruitment department has long loved to bet on. Leipzig know exactly what they have on their hands and, according to one journalist, value him at up to €120m (£104m).

Diomande has done his part. The decision now lies with the clubs. Liverpool and PSG must convince Leipzig, and one of them will likely walk away with a player being spoken of as a future superstar.

Liverpool Step Into United’s Territory

While the forward line dominates the headlines, Liverpool are also moving aggressively in midfield – and straight into Manchester United’s path.

United, buoyed by Champions League qualification and planning a significant squad overhaul of their own, have been leading the chase for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes. The Portugal international has permission to leave the relegated Irons this summer, determined to avoid a season in the Championship after standing out in the Premier League.

Despite back-to-back relegations with Southampton and West Ham, Fernandes has emerged from both campaigns with credit. At 21, he has been widely viewed as one of the best performers in each of those sides, a rare constant in struggling teams.

United’s pitch has been clear: a move to Old Trafford, a place alongside compatriot Bruno Fernandes, and a central role in their rebuild. They have been seen as frontrunners.

Liverpool are not staying out of it. TEAMtalk report that the Anfield club are “ones to watch” in what is shaping up to be a fierce contest for his signature. West Ham want £80m for their standout midfielder, but early offers are expected to land closer to £60m. Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have also made contact, turning Fernandes into one of the most coveted midfielders of the window.

Liverpool’s recruitment team, already juggling a managerial transition, a defensive reshuffle and a complete rethink of the attack, now find themselves circling a player who could reshape their midfield for the next decade.

Diomande or PSG. Fernandes or United. Iraola walking into a club on the brink of a full-scale rebuild. Liverpool are not just entering a new era – they are gambling that bold, expensive decisions this summer will decide how long they stay at the top.
