England's Rice Returns to Training Ahead of Panama Clash

Declan Rice eased England nerves by returning to full training on Friday, but concern over Reece James refuses to go away on the eve of a game that can lock up top spot in Group L.

The Arsenal midfielder, who left Boston Stadium with strapping on his left calf after the bruising 0-0 draw with Ghana, sat out Thursday’s session. The early diagnosis was that the knock needed nothing more dramatic than rest, and that view held as he stepped back into the main group in Kansas City.

He is expected to be available for Saturday’s meeting with Panama (22:00 BST), a match that offers England the chance to finish the group phase with a game to spare and start plotting a cleaner route through the knockout rounds.

Whether Thomas Tuchel risks him from the start is another matter.

Rice is walking a disciplinary tightrope after his booking against Ghana left him one caution away from a suspension for the round of 32. Resting one of his most influential players now to protect him for later may appeal to Tuchel, but so does the opportunity to finish the job early and avoid a nervy final group fixture.

James missing as right-back puzzle grows

If Rice’s situation looks manageable, James’ is far more delicate.

The Chelsea defender missed Friday’s group session entirely, still troubled by the hamstring issue he picked up in that attritional stalemate with Ghana. While his team-mates went through their paces before flying out to New York, James stayed inside, following an individual programme at England’s Kansas City base.

At 26, and firmly established as a cornerstone of this side, his absence changes the feel of England’s right flank. Tuchel has options — Jarell Quansah, Djed Spence and Ezri Konsa can all operate at right-back — but none carries James’ blend of defensive authority and attacking punch.

For a coach who has built so much of England’s width and tempo around his full-backs, this is not a position he wanted to be juggling days before a decisive group fixture. The hope inside the camp is that this is a short-term setback, not the start of a tournament-defining story.

Anderson back as big-money move looms

There was better news in midfield beyond Rice.

Elliot Anderson, who missed Thursday’s session, rejoined the group on Friday. The Nottingham Forest midfielder, poised for a £116m move to Manchester City, has formed a promising partnership with Rice at the heart of Tuchel’s side and his presence restores some balance to England’s preparations.

Tuchel now faces a familiar tournament dilemma: rotate to protect legs and cards, or keep his core together to secure the group and build rhythm.

Win against Panama, and England seal first place in Group L and gain the luxury of choice in the knockouts. Drop points, and the margin for error shrinks fast.

With James in the treatment room and Rice one yellow card from trouble, Tuchel’s team sheet on Saturday night will say plenty about how he intends to navigate the rest of this tournament.
