Chelsea Sign Marco Palestra in Major Defensive Move
Chelsea are closing in on another major defensive investment, with Italy international Marco Palestra undergoing his medical in London ahead of a big-money move from Atalanta.
The right-back flew into the capital on Monday, his camp now ironing out the final details of what is set to be a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge. Barring late drama, he will sign today.
Chelsea outmuscle Inter
Inter thought they were in the race. Chelsea turned it into a sprint and disappeared over the horizon.
The Premier League club blew their Serie A rivals out of the water by doubling the salary on the table. Inter’s proposal stood at around €2.5m per season. Chelsea came in at €5m net per year, tied to a six-year deal with an option for a seventh. For a right-back entering his prime, that kind of commitment is hard to ignore.
Once that offer landed, the direction of travel was obvious.
A deal that underlines Atalanta’s model
The fee reflects how highly Palestra is rated in Bergamo and beyond. Figures around the deal vary slightly, but the structure is clear: Atalanta are set to receive €57m plus €3m in add-ons, with a 10 per cent cut of any future sale.
Some British reporting, including from Ben Jacobs, has framed the agreement as “in excess of €50m,” while Sky Sport Italia have gone stronger on the €57m plus bonuses package. Either way, it is a huge payday for Atalanta and another example of their ability to develop and sell elite talent at the right moment.
That 10 per cent sell-on clause could yet prove significant. Chelsea have not been shy about flipping assets at a profit in recent years, and Atalanta have smartly kept a stake in Palestra’s future.
A new chapter at Stamford Bridge
For Chelsea, this is another statement that the rebuild is not slowing down. A key Italy international, a fee nudging towards €60m, a contract that could run for seven seasons. This is a cornerstone signing, not a stopgap.
Palestra’s medical is the final hurdle. Once he walks out of that room and signs, the real work begins: proving that a bold move, a huge salary and a heavy price tag can be matched by performances in the most unforgiving league in Europe.
