Craig Gordon Retires: Scotland's Goalkeeping Legend Ends Career at 43

Craig Gordon, Scotland’s enduring last line of defence for two decades, has called time on his career at 43, bringing to a close one of the country’s great modern goalkeeping stories.

The Heart of Midlothian veteran, who also stood between the posts for Celtic and Sunderland, confirmed his retirement on Thursday in an emotional video message posted on social media.

“It has been a privilege to represent you,” Gordon told supporters, addressing a fan base that has followed him from his international debut in 2004 through to his final days in a Scotland shirt. “I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

Those words land heavily because of what came before them. Gordon did not feature on the pitch at the recent World Cup, serving instead as backup in all three group games to Angus Gunn, the man who has since departed for San Jose Earthquakes in Major League Soccer. Even on the sidelines, he was the outlier: at 43, he was the oldest of more than 1,250 players selected for the tournament.

His longevity at the top level was not a statistical quirk; it was a career built on resilience and reinvention. Gordon first pulled on the Scotland jersey in 2004 and went on to win 84 caps, placing him fifth on the national team’s all-time appearance list. Across those years he became a constant presence through cycles of managers, generations of teammates and shifting expectations around the national side.

At the World Cup, he did not get the farewell minutes some might have imagined. The honour of being the oldest player to actually step onto the pitch belonged instead to Cristiano Ronaldo, who turned 41 in February and featured in the tournament. Gordon’s role was different: a veteran voice in the dressing room, a safety net in reserve, a symbol of standards set over time.

He leaves the game with his gloves hung up but his place in Scottish football firmly secured, the image of a goalkeeper who refused to bow to age until he chose the moment himself.
