Chelsea’s New Era: Palestra Joins and Ramon Targeted
Chelsea’s new era under Xabi Alonso has not even officially begun, but the club’s transfer strategy already carries his fingerprints.
On Monday morning, Fabrizio Romano dropped the line that lit up west London: “Marco Palestra to Chelsea, here we go.” A verbal agreement is in place between Chelsea, Atalanta and the player, with the Bergamo club set to receive a package worth over €55 million plus a sell-on clause for the highly rated right wing-back.
It is not just the money that tells the story. It is how the deal was done.
Alonso on the phone, Inter left behind
Inter Milan thought they were in the home straight. Talks were advanced, the path looked clear. Then Chelsea stepped in, and Xabi Alonso himself picked up the phone.
The incoming Chelsea manager spoke directly with Palestra, the 21-year-old Italy international who can operate on both flanks, as a full-back or wing-back. According to Romano and reports from Italy, that personal intervention proved decisive.
La Gazzetta dello Sport detailed a long conversation between Alonso and the defender, with the Spaniard even dropping in some Italian as he explained how he had followed Palestra during his time at Cagliari and had been struck by his “English-style physicality”. Alonso reportedly outlined a vision in which Palestra could feature on either side of the pitch: on the right, battling Malo Gusto for minutes; on the left, where Marc Cucurella has recently moved on.
This is not a distant sporting director’s signing. It is a coach choosing his tools.
Alonso built his reputation at Bayer Leverkusen by trusting young, versatile talents and giving them responsibility in high-stakes games. Palestra fits that profile perfectly: energetic, aggressive, comfortable on both flanks and tactically flexible enough to switch systems mid-game. For Alonso, as Romano put it, he is “for sure a very interesting addition”.
Chelsea have paid like a club that believes it is buying a cornerstone, not a squad filler.
BlueCo turn to Como: Ramon on the radar
The Palestra deal, though, looks more like the opening move than the final flourish.
Romano has revealed that Chelsea’s ownership group, BlueCo, have also been impressed by Jacobo Ramon, the Spanish centre-back who emerged as one of Como’s standout performers last season. Ramon joined the club from Real Madrid in the summer of 2025 and blossomed under Cesc Fabregas, helping drive Como to a remarkable Champions League qualification.
At 21, Ramon has already shown he can anchor a defence in a demanding tactical environment. Fabregas’ side played with ambition, often building from the back, and Ramon thrived in that structure. That kind of profile naturally appeals to a club trying to modernise its back line.
Chelsea’s interest did not come out of nowhere. Talks between the London club and Como had already been opened over Trevoh Chalobah, who was requested by the Italian side but ultimately priced out of their range. As Romano explained, the conversation quickly widened: if Chalobah was too expensive, what about Ramon?
Chelsea have placed Ramon on a shortlist of four or five centre-backs they are tracking. No bid, no agreement, no “here we go” yet – but the line of communication is open, and the player is firmly on their radar.
There is a complication. Ramon’s rights are split: Real Madrid retain 50 per cent and hold a buy-back clause. Any move would have to satisfy Como and keep Madrid’s interests in mind. For Chelsea, that means navigating a more intricate negotiation, and accepting that another giant has a built-in route back to the player.
A clear defensive blueprint
Strip away the noise and a pattern emerges.
Chelsea are pushing hard for young, technically sharp defenders who can live comfortably in a high-intensity, possession-heavy system. Palestra brings energy and range on both flanks. Ramon, if Chelsea decide to move decisively, would add a composed, ball-playing presence at centre-back with Champions League football on his horizon.
Inter have already felt the sting of Chelsea’s new ruthlessness in the market. Como and Real Madrid may be next to test just how far BlueCo and Alonso are prepared to go to reshape this defence.
Palestra is on his way to Stamford Bridge. The question now is simple: will Ramon be the next piece in Alonso’s back-line rebuild?
