Tottenham Break Transfer Record for France Defender Alice Sombath
Tottenham have made their statement signing of the summer, breaking their transfer record to prise France international defender Alice Sombath away from Lyon.
The 22-year-old arrives for an undisclosed fee, but it eclipses the sum Spurs are believed to have paid for Norway midfielder Signe Gaupset – around £375,000 – last year. The length of Sombath’s contract has not been revealed, but the intent behind the deal is obvious: this is a cornerstone signing.
From Lyon royalty to Spurs project

Sombath can operate at centre-back or at right-back, a modern, flexible defender schooled in the demands of top-level European football. She came through Paris FC’s academy, then moved into the Paris St-Germain youth system before Lyon secured her in 2020. Each step has been upwards.
Her international résumé matches that trajectory. She has represented France at every age group from under-16s to the senior team and featured in all of France’s matches at Euro 2025, starting three games in the group stage. Big tournaments, big stages, no hiding.
“Every game is tough – that’s what I want”
Sombath arrives with a clear-eyed view of the challenge awaiting her in England.
“I want to do my best here at Tottenham. I think the league is very competitive, every game is tough and that's what I'm most excited about,” she said. She has watched from afar and liked what she saw. “I saw that Spurs had a very good season last year. My qualities can bring something to the team, even though I know they already have a lot.”
That last line matters. Spurs are not selling this as a rescue mission. They are selling it as an upgrade.

Tottenham’s window has been brisk, targeted, and increasingly impressive. Sombath is the headline arrival, but she is not arriving alone.
