Tottenham Set to Sacrifice Cristian Romero as Barcelona and Inter Milan Circle
Tottenham are preparing to cut loose one of the pillars of their defence, with Cristian Romero expected to leave before the transfer window closes and both Barcelona and Inter Milan positioning themselves for a move.
This is not a minor reshuffle. It is a deliberate reset.
Spurs have thrown their weight behind Roberto De Zerbi in a lavish summer of recruitment, committing around £237m to reshape the squad. Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali headline the outlay, a trio that signals both long‑term planning and immediate ambition.
Experience has been layered on top. Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson have arrived as free agents, bringing leadership and a hardened edge to a dressing room that has too often been accused of fragility.
The knock-on effect is clearest at centre-back. With no European football on the calendar and two of those six signings strengthening the heart of defence, the numbers simply do not add up. Micky van de Ven, Van Hecke, Senesi and Kevin Danso already crowd the depth chart. Something – or someone – has to give.
All signs point to Romero.
The Argentina international has been a constant presence since first joining Spurs on loan in 2021, evolving into a cornerstone of their back line and a vocal leader on the pitch. But the club has now decided to move on, and the market has responded quickly.
“Romero, I stand by my information, it’s over between Romero and Tottenham,” he said. “Romero is going to leave Tottenham this summer. He’s leaving, that’s the intention.
“Spurs signed so many centre-backs. They have Micky van de Ven, Van Hecke, Senesi, Kevin Danso, and don’t play European football this season, so they’re ready to let Romero go.”
The suitors are heavyweight. Inter Milan have pushed to the front of the queue, with Romano describing the Serie A champions as “very keen” on the defender. The key question in Milan is not desire but money: whether Inter can structure a deal that satisfies Tottenham’s demands.
Barcelona are watching the situation, but under strict conditions. The LaLiga champions will only move if they first offload a centre-back, turning Romero into a potential piece in a broader defensive domino. No sale, no space. No space, no Romero.
The pressure on Tottenham’s decision-makers has been eased by the player’s stance. Reports from Italy indicate Spurs are not forcing out a reluctant star; Romero is understood to be content with the idea of ending his spell in north London this summer. Crucially, he is open to joining Inter and is not waiting exclusively for Barcelona to clear the decks.
That flexibility could prove decisive.
On the financial side, Tottenham’s internal calculations are already being tested. Club insider Graeme Bailey has indicated Spurs are aiming for a £50m fee. In an ideal world, that is the number that would both reflect Romero’s pedigree and help balance a summer of heavy investment.
Reality may bite a little harder. With the defender now 28 and carrying a chequered injury record, there is an acceptance within the club that they might have to compromise. A figure closer to £40m is seen as realistic if it ensures a deal actually happens rather than drags into stalemate.
So Tottenham stand at a familiar crossroads: a key player on the verge of the exit, a new manager backed aggressively, and a squad being bent into a different shape.
The rebuild is in full swing. The question now is whether losing Romero becomes the necessary sacrifice that unlocks the next phase – or the decision they spend the season justifying.
