Tariq Lamptey Joins QPR: A Path to Revival
Tariq Lamptey’s long road back from injury has brought him to Loftus Road.
Queens Park Rangers have snapped up the right-back on a free transfer after his departure from Fiorentina, betting that a fit and focused Lamptey can rediscover the electric form that once lit up the Premier League.
A career that stalled in Florence
At 25, Lamptey should be entering his prime. Instead, the last year has been a battle just to get back on the pitch.
He joined Fiorentina from Brighton in September 2025, a move that looked like a fresh start on the continent for one of English football’s most exciting attacking full-backs. The adventure barely got going. A serious knee injury restricted him to just two appearances in Serie A, and the season drifted away from him.
Now comes the reset.
“My recovery (from injury) has gone well and I'm not too far away now. I'm looking forward to joining with the boys,” he told the club’s website.
For a player whose game is built on acceleration and sharp changes of direction, those words matter. So does the next line.
“Throughout my football journey I've always been resilient.”
QPR are banking on that resilience as much as his pace.
From Cobham to the Championship
Lamptey’s story began at Chelsea’s academy, where he was highly regarded but blocked by a conveyor belt of full-backs. He broke through just long enough to make his Premier League debut against Arsenal, a cameo that hinted at his fearlessness, then chose to leave for regular football at Brighton.
On the south coast he became a fan favourite, bombing down the right flank and racking up more than 120 appearances. His performances pushed him into the international conversation, first with England’s under-21s, then with Ghana after a change of allegiance.
He went to the 2022 World Cup with the Black Stars and now has 11 senior caps. That is the level QPR are trying to unlock again.
QPR’s statement of intent
For QPR, this is more than a free transfer. It is a statement about where they think they are heading.
“We've had good conversations about what he wants to achieve and how he feels that this is the right environment for him to flourish in,” said chief executive Christian Nourry.
That word – flourish – is doing a lot of work. It suggests a club positioning itself as a platform, not just a refuge.
“His decision to join QPR over a myriad of other EFL Championship clubs and clubs abroad is a further signal of the growing potential of this football club,” Nourry added.
QPR have not disclosed the length or terms of Lamptey’s contract, but the message is clear: a player with options has chosen West London. That matters in a Championship market where reputation and ambition can tilt decisions.
The countdown to Portsmouth
The timing is tight. QPR open their Championship campaign away at Portsmouth on Saturday, 15 August (15:00 BST). Lamptey insists he is “not too far away” from full fitness, but the club will have to balance excitement with caution after his knee problems.
If they get that right, they may have landed one of the division’s most dynamic full-backs without paying a fee.
The question now is simple: can Tariq Lamptey turn resilience into a full-scale revival in the colours of QPR?
