Liverpool's Late Bid for Diomande Fails as PSG Takes Lead
Liverpool’s late bid to snatch Yan Diomande from PSG looks doomed, with RB Leipzig braced to lose their star winger and Paris closing in on a blockbuster deal driven from the very top of the club.
This is a transfer battle Liverpool had circled from the start of the summer. It now looks like one they’re about to lose.
Liverpool swing late – but Diomande’s heart is in Paris
When Mohamed Salah’s contract was ripped up at the end of last season, it left more than just a vacancy on the right flank. It created a strategic hole in Liverpool’s attack, one the club identified Yan Diomande as the ideal man to fill.
At 19, the RB Leipzig winger has already built a reputation as a ruthless presence off the right, and Liverpool moved aggressively. An offer worth €100m – around £85m – went in. The structure of the bid has been debated: either €90m plus €10m in add-ons, or €80m with €20m in bonuses. The total, though, was clear. So was Leipzig’s answer.
They said no.
The rejection didn’t just stall Liverpool’s move; it coincided with Diomande signalling that his preferred destination was Paris Saint-Germain. At that moment, it felt as if the race had been run.
Liverpool’s response was to pivot. Attention shifted towards Bradley Barcola, a player whose position at PSG could be squeezed if Diomande walks through the door at the Parc des Princes. But inside Anfield, Diomande remained the dream signing, the one they believed could reset the forward line for years.
So Liverpool went back in.
PSG power move: Al-Khelaifi steps in
TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey reports that Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City all made late approaches to test the waters around Diomande. Only one of those clubs, though, had already thrown serious money at Leipzig. Only one had made him their priority.
It hasn’t changed the player’s mind.
Bailey’s information is blunt: Diomande wants PSG. The winger’s stance has not shifted, even as English interest intensified in the final stretch of negotiations.
Any hint that PSG might cool on the deal has been firmly pushed aside. According to the report, club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has now taken personal control of talks with Leipzig’s Red Bull hierarchy, a move that has immediately altered the tone of discussions.
When the president steps in, it usually means one thing at PSG: the deal matters.
Al-Khelaifi’s long-standing relationship with key figures at Red Bull has helped push negotiations forward, and sources close to the talks believe an agreement is now close. Inside Leipzig, there is an acceptance that Diomande is on his way to Paris. Resigned is the word being used.
The numbers underline PSG’s intent. The French champions are prepared to pay around €110m, roughly £93.5m, to get this over the line. That figure eclipses Liverpool’s rejected bid and reflects how highly the European champions rate the Ivorian.
Liverpool turn back to Barcola as reality bites
For Liverpool, the picture is becoming brutally clear. The late push has not shifted the ground. The money was big, the timing bold, but the player’s choice looks set: PSG over Anfield.
With Diomande slipping away, Liverpool are expected to refocus fully on Barcola. The France international finds himself at an impasse with PSG over a new, improved contract, and the Paris club are open to a sale at the right price.
Barcola is not the original plan. He is, however, fast becoming the realistic one.
Liverpool still need a right-sided solution. The market is moving, elite wingers are being locked down, and the Salah-sized gap in their forward line will not wait.
Diomande looks destined for Paris. The question now is whether Liverpool can turn that setback into an opportunity with Barcola – or risk entering the new season still searching for the heir to their departed superstar.
