Real Madrid Signs Ibrahima Konate on Free Transfer
Real Madrid have moved quickly and decisively. Ibrahima Konate, out of contract at Liverpool at the end of June, will join the European champions on a four-year deal, signing on until 30 June 2030.
The 27-year-old France centre-back leaves Anfield on a free after talks over a new deal collapsed, with a clear gap between the player’s camp and Liverpool over his value and wages. For Madrid, it is a rare opportunity: a Champions League-level defender, in his prime years, available without a transfer fee.
Madrid confirmed they had reached an agreement with Konate “for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons”. The timing is significant. Konate is currently with France at the 2026 World Cup, and his future now settled, his focus turns fully to the tournament.
Konate arrived at Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35m on a five-year contract. Across three seasons, he became a central figure in Jürgen Klopp’s defence, combining pace, power and recovery speed in a high line that demanded bravery and athleticism.
He leaves with a solid haul of medals. In 183 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, Konate helped the club win the Premier League, the FA Cup and two League Cups, adding steel to a side already rich in attacking talent.
The departure has carried an emotional edge. Konate recently admitted he was “deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye” to Liverpool supporters when the Reds played their final Premier League game of the season against Brentford on 24 May. At that point, he said, “I didn't know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you.”
That finality now has a destination. From Anfield’s Kop to the glare of the Bernabéu, Konate steps into a new chapter at a club that measures defenders by the biggest nights and the biggest trophies.
