Patrick Vieira Urges Martinez to Rethink Ronaldo's Role
Patrick Vieira has drawn a hard line in the sand over Cristiano Ronaldo’s place in Portugal’s starting XI, warning that the forward’s legacy could be “spoiled a little bit” if Roberto Martinez refuses to make a ruthless call.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the former France midfielder argued that Portugal’s head coach must put the team above the status of his captain, after Ronaldo failed to score in the 1-1 draw with DR Congo at the FIFA World Cup.
For Vieira, sentiment cannot be allowed to cloud judgment.
“He [Martinez] has to think about the team first before thinking about Ronaldo,” the ex-Arsenal captain said, urging the Portugal boss to consider benching the 39-year-old for next week’s World Cup clash with Uzbekistan. “So he will have to make a really strong decision not to start him if the team is better without him.”
The draw with DR Congo has intensified scrutiny on Ronaldo’s role. He remains the face of the national side and the focal point of Portugal’s attack, but his influence is no longer beyond question. Every missed chance, every quiet performance, now feeds into a wider debate: is the team still built around him, or is it being held back by that very idea?
Vieira did not question Ronaldo’s greatness. In fact, he underlined it. That is precisely why he fears the next chapter could turn sour.
“I worry for him [Ronaldo], his legacy will be spoiled a little bit if he kicks off and he gets taken off, because for two decades he has been an extraordinarily wonderful footballer.”
It is a stark warning. A legend who dominated the sport for 20 years now stands at a crossroads, and a coach in Martinez must decide whether to keep faith with the icon or reshape his side for the demands of the tournament.
The call on Ronaldo against Uzbekistan will say plenty about where Portugal are heading—and how one of football’s greatest careers is allowed to end on the biggest stage.
