Manchester United Target Felix Nmecha as Casemiro Successor

Manchester United’s search for the next anchor of their midfield has taken them back across town – and back in time – to a player who once wore sky blue.

Felix Nmecha, now a driving force for Borussia Dortmund and a standout at the World Cup with Germany, has emerged as a serious option for United as they plan for life after Casemiro, according to reports in Germany.

The 25-year-old has been one of the breakout stories of the tournament. He announced himself in style with the opening goal in Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Curacao, lashing a first-time, right-footed strike into the top corner from around 20 yards. It was the kind of finish that turns heads at a World Cup, but it’s his work between both boxes that has really sharpened interest.

Nmecha has impressed scouts with his range. He covers ground, breaks up counters, and drives play forward – the sort of all-court midfielder United have lacked as Casemiro’s influence has waned. Those inside Old Trafford are understood to see him as a potential long-term replacement for the Brazilian.

The twist? He learned his trade on the other side of Manchester.

Nmecha came through the academy at Manchester City, progressing through the youth ranks before leaving in 2021. A productive loan spell at Anderlecht put him on the map, and Wolfsburg moved quickly to sign him. His performances there earned him a switch to Dortmund, where his game has gone up another level.

Now, reports from Sky Sports Deutschland suggest United are among a cluster of clubs tracking him closely. City, his former employers and United’s fiercest rivals, are also credited with an interest. Real Madrid have been linked too, with returning manager Jose Mourinho understood to be an admirer.

That kind of company tells its own story. So does his contract.

Dortmund are under no pressure to sell. The Bundesliga club have Nmecha tied down until 2030 and are said to be relaxed about his future. A release clause, set at around £61m, only activates in the summer of 2027, giving Dortmund control over the next few windows and strengthening their hand in any negotiations.

Inside the club, the expectation is clear: if he moves, it is more likely to be during that release-clause period than in the immediate future. For now, they see him as central to their plans.

Nmecha’s camp are striking a similar tone. Speaking to Bild, his agent Tobi Alabi stressed that the midfielder is not agitating for a move.

“Felix still has two years left on his contract, and we fully respect that. Borussia Dortmund have played an important role in his development,” Alabi said. “He is grateful for the trust and the platform the club have given him. The player is developing from season to season, and when a player performs well, there is naturally always interest and questions about his future. That’s part of top-level football and reflects the progress he has made. Right now, the focus is very clear: Felix is determined to give everything for Borussia Dortmund, to fight for the club and to help the team achieve its goals.”

United, though, are clearly reshaping their midfield.

They are on the brink of completing a £39m deal for Atalanta’s Brazil international Ederson, who is expected to undergo a medical while on World Cup duty. His arrival would inject energy and bite into the centre of the pitch, but the club’s recruitment drive points to a broader reset rather than a single signing.

Casemiro’s future remains uncertain, and United know they cannot afford another misstep in such a crucial area. A World Cup star in his prime, with Premier League roots and Champions League experience, fits the profile of what they want next.

The question is whether they can tempt Dortmund to the table – and whether Nmecha’s second act in Manchester will play out in red, or if City move to reclaim one that got away.
