Manchester United Pursue Sander Berge for Midfield Reinforcement
Manchester United’s midfield overhaul is gathering pace – and Sander Berge has moved firmly into their sights.
With a deal already in place for Atalanta’s Ederson Silva, United’s new regime under INEOS is pushing ahead with plans to add at least one more central midfielder this summer. The club’s recruitment team has cast a wide net, and Berge, one of Fulham’s most dependable performers, is now under serious consideration, according to The Athletic.
He is not alone on the list. United have been in contact over West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, while Tyler Adams, the former Leeds United midfielder now at Bournemouth, is also being monitored. Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest has been ruled out, with United unwilling to go near the £130m valuation placed on the 21-year-old.
Berge, though, ticks a lot of boxes.
Berge back on a big-club radar
Fulham paid £25m to prise the Norway international from Burnley in 2024, and he has quietly become one of the Premier League’s most reliable defensive midfielders. Strong in duels, calm under pressure and tactically disciplined, he has been a constant in Marco Silva’s side.
United know him well. They looked at Berge when he left Burnley for Fulham and have continued to track his progress. Now 28, he is under contract at Craven Cottage until 2029, with Fulham holding an option for a further year, which places the London club in a powerful negotiating position. Any deal would require a clear profit on that original £25m fee.
Berge is currently part of Norway’s squad at the 2026 World Cup, a stage that only sharpens the spotlight. A strong tournament would harden Fulham’s stance and potentially draw more suitors into the race.
For United, the appeal is obvious. They need a midfielder who can shield the back four, use the ball sensibly and allow their more expressive players to operate higher up the pitch. Berge has been doing exactly that for Fulham, week after week.
A Liverpool dream, a United opportunity
There is a twist that will not be lost on supporters at Old Trafford. Berge has spoken openly in the past about his admiration for Liverpool and Anfield.
Speaking to TV2 in November 2019, during his time at KRC Genk, he said: “Playing at Anfield is a dream for everyone in the world, and not least for Norwegians. Liverpool are the best team [at the moment] and have the most fans. So I could certainly like to play at Anfield as often as possible.”
Jürgen Klopp was an admirer as well. After a Champions League meeting between Liverpool and Genk, Klopp told Berge he was “a very interesting player,” as later reported by The Athletic.
Those comments will add a bit of edge if Berge does end up walking out at Old Trafford in United red rather than Liverpool red. Rivalry runs deep, but careers move fast. A player who once dreamed of Anfield may now find his next step lies on the opposite side of English football’s fiercest divide.
INEOS and the shape of United’s new midfield
What is clear is that INEOS are not content with a single marquee addition in midfield. Ederson’s arrival from Atalanta brings energy and ball-winning qualities, yet the recruitment drive is broader and more deliberate than a one-off fix.
Fernandes offers youth and upside. Adams brings Premier League know-how and pressing intensity. Berge would add height, composure and a proven record as a defensive screen in this league.
United’s hierarchy are “running the rule” over all of them, weighing price, profile and availability against a tight summer budget and other priorities in defence and attack. Fulham’s stance – wanting a profit on Berge – will be a key factor. So will the player’s own ambitions at what is a pivotal point in his career.
If United decide Berge is the man to anchor their new-look midfield, they will have to pay for the privilege. The question now is simple: do they believe the Norwegian is the one worth building that core around?
