Manchester United Confirms Departures of Sancho, Malacia, and Casemiro

Manchester United’s latest retained list has drawn a sharp line under three very different Old Trafford stories, with Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro all confirmed to be leaving the club at the end of their contracts.

Jadon Sancho

Sancho’s time at United always felt like it was waiting to ignite. It never truly did.

Signed amid huge fanfare from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for £73million, the England international arrived as the supposed crown jewel of a new attacking era. Instead, his United career splintered into brief flashes of quality and long stretches of frustration, before finally fading into a series of loans.

Sancho made just 83 appearances for United across three seasons, a modest total for a player signed to be a cornerstone. The past campaign took him to Aston Villa, where he rebuilt some rhythm away from the Old Trafford glare. Before that, he returned to Dortmund on loan and also spent time at Chelsea, a tour of Europe’s elite that underlined his enduring reputation even as his United chapter stalled.

Now 24 and at a crossroads, he leaves as a free agent, with links already emerging to both Dortmund and Villa. The talent has never been in doubt. The question is where it finally finds a permanent home.

Tyrell Malacia

On the opposite flank of United’s rebuild stood Tyrell Malacia, a quieter figure but a symbol of the club’s attempt to modernise their full-back options.

The Dutch defender joined from Feyenoord in 2022 and quickly showed why United moved for him: aggressive in the press, sharp in one‑v‑one duels, tidy in possession. Yet his progress never quite gathered momentum. Injuries bit hard, limiting him to 50 appearances and repeatedly halting any sustained run in the side.

At 26, Malacia departs with the sense of a project left unfinished. There were glimpses of a reliable Premier League full-back. There was never the uninterrupted season that might have cemented his place.

Casemiro

Then there is Casemiro, whose Old Trafford legacy is more substantial, if still tinged with a feeling of what might have been.

Arriving from Real Madrid as a serial Champions League winner, the Brazilian midfielder brought instant authority to United’s midfield. Across four seasons he played 160 games, scored 26 goals and, at his best, gave the team a spine it had lacked for years.

His leadership, his reading of danger, his knack for decisive goals in big moments – all of it briefly transformed United’s midfield landscape. But time is ruthless. As the demands of the Premier League piled up, Casemiro’s influence began to wane, and the club started to look towards a younger, more mobile core.

Now at the World Cup with Brazil, he leaves United with his medal collection intact and his reputation largely undimmed, even if the final months hinted at the need for change on both sides.

The club confirmed the trio’s departures on Wednesday as part of their official retained list, drawing a clear line before another summer of rebuilding. In a short statement, United thanked Casemiro, Malacia and Sancho for their contributions and wished them well for the future.

Three exits. Three careers that never quite aligned with the original script. For United, the clear-out continues. For the players, the next move will decide whether Old Trafford was a detour or the defining stage of their careers.
