Manchester United's Cautious Pursuit of Mateus Fernandes Amid West Ham Fee Standoff

Manchester United want Mateus Fernandes. The player wants Manchester United. The only thing snarling up the move is the number on West Ham United’s calculator.

United have been heavily linked with a bid for the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder, with Sky Sports reporting last week that an opening offer was being prepared. For now, though, Old Trafford has stopped short of putting anything formal in writing. This is a pursuit being handled with care, not emotion.

A £40m signing now treated like a £100m asset

West Ham picked up Fernandes from Southampton last summer for just under £40m, betting on his ceiling rather than his CV. A year on, they value him as if he has already hit that ceiling.

Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, outlined the current state of play. United, he said, are in “direct contact” with the player’s camp, and Fernandes is “very keen” on the move to Old Trafford. Personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block; that part of the deal is moving.

The problem sits in east London.

Romano reports that West Ham’s ideal valuation of Fernandes is £100m. Behind the scenes, there is an acceptance that a deal would likely be done at around £85m, “not less than this.” United, unsurprisingly, are pushing to drag that figure down and are refusing to be rushed into a corner.

West Ham’s hard line meets financial reality

The stance from West Ham jars with their own financial bulletin earlier this year. In February, the club publicly acknowledged they would need to sell players in the summer, even if they stayed in the Premier League, after posting a £104.2m loss for the last financial year.

Relegation to the Championship has only sharpened that reality. On paper, they need sales. On the phone, they are acting like they don’t.

That tension is driving this negotiation. West Ham know they are sitting on one of the most coveted young midfielders in the country. United know their counterparts are under pressure to balance the books. Somewhere between those two truths lies the eventual fee.

United calm, but rivals lurk

Inside Old Trafford, the mood is far from panicked. According to Shaun Connolly of Theatre of Red, United remain “confident of a deal” for Fernandes. The message from the INEOS-led hierarchy is clear: they will not allow West Ham to dictate the terms of engagement.

“He is keen on a move to Old Trafford, and staff are excited to add him to the squad. Patience is required,” Connolly reports.

That patience, though, has a shelf life. Other clubs are circling, sensing an opportunity if United’s negotiations drag on. A late hijack cannot be ruled out, and everyone in Manchester knows how quickly a seemingly controlled situation can twist once a second bidder walks through the door.

For now, United are playing the long game. As long as they keep their numbers disciplined and avoid being dragged into a bidding war, the expectation is that Fernandes should be prised from east London for a fee significantly below the headline £100m figure.

The midfielder wants the move. United want the player. West Ham want the money. The question now is simple: who blinks first?
