Manchester United Targets Mateus Fernandes for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s midfield overhaul has a clear new priority – and his name is Mateus Fernandes.

Fresh from tying up a deal for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, United have turned their attention to West Ham’s standout talent, with club insiders increasingly confident that Old Trafford will be his next destination despite rival interest across Europe.

Fernandes the Centrepiece of Phase Two

United’s return to the Champions League has sharpened the need for depth and quality in the middle of the pitch. Ederson is viewed as the first building block. Fernandes is being lined up as the next.

The 21-year-old Portugal international was one of the few bright sparks in a grim West Ham season that ended in relegation. He had already endured the drop with Southampton and, once again, has no intention of following his club into the Championship.

United have reportedly reached an agreement on personal terms with Fernandes. That is the easy part. The hard part is negotiating with West Ham, who value their midfielder at around £85m and know they are not dealing with a one-horse race.

Even so, United remain “huge favourites” to land him, according to sources close to the club.

Old Trafford Pulling Power

The lure of Old Trafford still carries weight, and in Fernandes’ case, there is an extra pull: Bruno Fernandes.

Reports suggest Mateus is keen to join his compatriot and idol at the “Theatre of Dreams”, a partnership United believe could define their midfield for years. The club’s hierarchy see him as a long-term piece, not a short-term patch.

Paris Saint-Germain have monitored the situation. Tottenham Hotspur have gone a step further and are described as “very close” to agreeing personal terms with the player themselves.

Yet a fresh update from United-focused outlet Theatre of Red paints a different picture of the race. Roberto De Zerbi’s side – a reference to Spurs under their new boss – are still regarded as a “distant second” in the chase, with the gap unlikely to close unless United step away from the deal.

For now, they have no intention of doing that.

Six-Year Bet on Summerville as Attack Takes Shape

Midfield might be the headline act of United’s summer, but it is not the only department under renovation.

Club sources have consistently indicated that a left-sided attacker is also on the agenda. Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa has admirers at Old Trafford, yet another name has surged to the front of discussions: Crysencio Summerville.

Like Fernandes, Summerville is using the 2026 World Cup as a global showcase. The winger has started the tournament in North America in electric fashion, scoring two goals in two games for the Netherlands and underlining why he is attracting Premier League attention.

Following West Ham’s relegation, Summerville is thought to be available for around £50m. One reporter has claimed United have already put a six-year contract on the table for the 24-year-old, a clear sign of how strongly they view his potential role in the new-look attack.

Any move for Summerville could gather speed if Marcus Rashford leaves. Barcelona held an option to buy the England international but have not taken it up, leaving his future open but unresolved.

So United push on with their plans: Fernandes as the heartbeat of a new midfield, Summerville as a fresh threat from the left. The question now is not whether they are rebuilding, but how radically this window will reshape the team that walks out at Old Trafford on Champions League nights.
