Craig Bellamy Out of Running for Burnley Manager Position
Craig Bellamy will not be the man to lead Burnley back to the Premier League. What had looked like a serious possibility has collapsed, with the proposed move “falling through” according to reports.
The Wales manager, a former Clarets coach and a familiar face at Turf Moor, had previously ruled out leaving his national team post for Celtic. Burnley, though, was different. The chance to take charge of a recently relegated side he knew well appeared to tempt him, and the links gathered pace as the club began planning for life back in the Championship.
That path has now closed. Sky Sports News reports that Burnley have moved on and are focusing on other candidates, with Steve Cooper and Rob Edwards among the names under consideration. Edwards is on the market after his recent dismissal by Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Cooper remains one of the most respected free agents in the British game.
Bellamy’s connection with Burnley runs deeper than a passing rumour. He served as Vincent Kompany’s assistant during the Belgian’s tenure, helping shape the front-foot, possession-heavy style that powered the club to promotion before Kompany left for Bayern Munich. For some, Bellamy looked a natural successor, a continuity candidate who understood both the squad and the club’s recent identity.
Decision Ahead
Burnley’s hierarchy now face a different decision. Do they chase a coach like Cooper, who has already shown he can guide a club into the Premier League and fight to keep it there? Or do they back someone like Edwards, younger, ambitious, and eager to prove his Wolves exit was a bump rather than a verdict?
What is clear is the scale of the task. Since the 2021/22 season, Burnley have bounced between the top flight and the Championship, never quite settling, never quite stabilising. The next appointment has to halt that yo-yo pattern.
The Clarets want a manager who can get them up – and this time, keep them there.
