Celtic Frustration as Champions Flag Day Scheduled for Monday Night

Celtic will begin their title defence under a cloud of frustration after the 2026/27 Scottish Premiership fixtures landed their Champions Flag Day on a Monday night – and in direct conflict with their own plans for the occasion.

The new campaign kicks off in late July, with the opening schedule confirmed for champions Celtic, rivals Rangers and last season’s runners-up Hearts of Midlothian. The league table barely had time to settle before controversy arrived.

Celtic’s anger stems from the decision to stage their first league match, at home to Dundee on August 3, on a Monday evening rather than over the weekend, when they traditionally unfurl the championship flag in front of a full, celebratory crowd.

The club did not hide its irritation.

“It is important that supporters are aware of this as early as possible and the background to this decision, which is outwith our control,” read a Celtic statement, laying the blame squarely on external factors. The message was blunt: the champions feel hamstrung over their own big day.

“Clearly, our priority will always be our supporters and, against any measure, staging the Champions Flag Day on a Monday evening is disappointing. We have made repeated representations to Police Scotland and to the SPFL to avoid this scheduling.

“However, surprisingly, we have been told that there is no choice owing to Police Scotland being unable to support the fixture on a weekend which coincides with other events.“

The pressure from the stands has at least forced one concession. Celtic have managed to drag the kick-off forward from 8pm to 7:30pm, a small but significant shift aimed at easing the strain on travelling fans trying to get to and from Glasgow on a work night.

Title Drama Still Fresh

The sense of grievance is sharpened by how Celtic claimed the crown last season. They sealed the title in dramatic fashion with a 3-1 win over Hearts on the final day, a result that turned a tense run-in into a party.

Arne Engels, Daizen Maeda and Callum Osmand all found the net in that decisive match, the goals not only securing the victory but underlining the depth of contribution across the squad in the decisive moments of the campaign.

Across the city, Rangers unravelled. A run of four defeats in their final five league games turned a tight race into a procession, the collapse dumping them into third place and leaving them 10 points adrift of Celtic by the finish. For Celtic supporters, that implosion was the perfect finishing touch to a title win; for Rangers, it triggered upheaval.

Managerial Shock on the Govan Touchline

The first jolt of the new season arrived early. Derek McInnes has walked away from Hearts to take the reins at Rangers in a move that reshapes the league’s managerial landscape before a ball is kicked.

His debut in the Ibrox dugout comes on July 31 against Dundee United, a fixture already heavy with scrutiny as fans look for signs that Rangers can steady themselves after last season’s late collapse.

Hearts, left to pick up the pieces after finishing second and then losing their manager, begin their post-McInnes rebuild with a demanding trip to Aberdeen on Saturday, August 1. It is the kind of opening test that can either rattle a squad still adjusting to change or harden it quickly.

Against that backdrop, Celtic’s irritation over scheduling is more than a minor diary complaint. The champions wanted a weekend flag day, a full house, and a celebration that matched the scale of last season’s finale. Instead, they will raise the banner under the floodlights on a Monday night, asking their support to bend their lives around a fixture they believe could have been avoided.

The league season has not yet started, but the tone is already set: Celtic defending their crown, Rangers trying to repair their reputation under a new manager, Hearts searching for stability, and off-the-pitch decisions adding extra edge to an already combustible campaign.
