Aston Villa Signs Joao Gomes for £38m Amid Midfield Overhaul

Aston Villa have underlined their growing ambition with the £38m signing of Joao Gomes from Wolves, adding another major piece to a rapidly reconstructed midfield.

The Brazil international arrives for an initial £34m, with a further £4m tied to add-ons, as Villa move aggressively to reshape Unai Emery’s engine room before the new season.

This is no isolated splash. On Friday, Villa smashed their transfer record with a deal worth more than £50m for Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, beating Newcastle to the Switzerland international and sending a clear signal to their Premier League rivals.

Now comes Gomes, 25, prised away from Wolves after a pursuit that drew serious interest from Atletico Madrid. The Spanish club had tracked the tenacious midfielder, but Villa made their move decisive. Gomes left Wolves’ training camp in Portugal on Thursday to undergo a medical and complete the switch to Villa Park.

It is a transfer driven as much by necessity as ambition.

Amadou Onana, a central pillar of Emery’s plans, is out until next year after suffering a serious knee injury while on World Cup duty with Belgium. At the same time, Morgan Rogers is poised to depart, with Villa having agreed a £117m deal with Chelsea for the midfielder. The result is a midfield stripped of two significant figures and a club forced into big, bold decisions.

Gomes brings Premier League experience and a rugged edge. He made 41 appearances for Wolves last season in a campaign that ended with them bottom of the table, one of the few consistent performers in a struggling side. Since arriving from Flamengo in 2023, he has played 130 times for the club and scored seven goals, evolving from a raw import into a proven top-flight competitor.

For Wolves, his departure marks the end of a short but intense chapter. For Villa, it feels like the continuation of a clear strategy: pay big for prime-age, battle-tested midfielders who can carry the club into the next phase under Emery.

Two major signings in the space of days, one record fee already broken and another hefty outlay completed. Villa’s midfield will look very different when the season starts. The only real question now is how quickly this expensive new core can turn financial muscle into sustained success on the pitch.
