Arsenal Signs Northern Ireland Prodigy Phoenix Blayney
Arsenal have won a fiercely contested battle for one of Northern Ireland’s brightest young prospects, with 15-year-old Phoenix Blayney set to join the club from Larne.
The teenager impressed during a trial with the Gunners, catching the eye of academy staff and accelerating Arsenal’s move to secure him on a long-term pathway deal. Liverpool and Nottingham Forest both put contracts on the table, and Blayney was even spotted at Anfield in full Liverpool kit after touring their training facilities. The pull of north London proved stronger.
His father, Alan Blayney, confirmed that Arsenal have clinched the deal, with the framework already in place.
“Everything has been agreed with Arsenal, he just needs to sign the contract,” he told the Belfast Telegraph. “It’s done and dusted and a pre-contract will be signed when the time is right.”
Blayney is expected to sign a pre-contract when he links up with Arsenal this summer, before committing to professional terms when he turns 17 in November 2027. It is a now familiar route for the club’s academy, mirroring the paths taken by Marli Salmon and Max Dowman, both of whom signed pre-contracts this season and will move onto professional deals on their 17th birthdays.
For Phoenix Blayney, the choice at elite level was not a simple one. Premier League options were on the table, but one club stood out.
His father described Arsenal as the “shining light between them all” when comparing the offers from England’s top flight. The connection went beyond facilities and promises.
“Phoenix enjoyed being at Arsenal, he felt a connection there and really likes the coaches,” he said.
There is also a familiar face waiting for him in north London. “One of his good friends Daniel McCarron has joined the club and that’s probably one of the reasons too. Him and Daniel play in the same Northern Ireland team,” Blayney added.
For Arsenal, this is another deliberate step in a clear strategy. The club have been aggressive in targeting elite youth talent, determined to stock their academy with players capable of making the leap to senior football in the coming years. Inside the club, Blayney is viewed as one of those high-ceiling prospects.
He will arrive as a 15-year-old with options already behind him, a pre-contract ahead of him, and a growing reputation in Northern Ireland. The rest will be decided on the pitches of London Colney.
