Arsenal's Pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes Faces Rejection

Arsenal’s first move for Bruno Guimaraes has been swatted away, but this saga is only just warming up.

The Premier League champions have finally stepped out of the shadows on a long-term target, testing Newcastle United’s resolve with what has been described as an opening offer in the region of £55 million. It landed with a thud. Newcastle’s response was blunt: the door is closed at that price.

Arsenal test Newcastle’s resolve over Guimaraes

For months, Bruno Guimaraes has sat near the top of Arsenal’s midfield wish list. The Brazilian is one of several Newcastle players attracting serious interest after Eddie Howe’s side missed out on European football, a setback that has sharpened the focus on their squad and finances.

Arsenal sense an opportunity. They want a new central midfielder and a left-sided attacker this summer, and Guimaraes has been earmarked as the man to elevate Mikel Arteta’s engine room.

Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed on Thursday that Arsenal initially made what he called an “exploratory approach” to the player’s camp, mirroring similar groundwork previously laid by Manchester United. At that stage, there had been no contact with Newcastle, and the message from St James’ Park was clear: they did not wish to sell.

That stance has now been tested directly.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Arsenal followed up with a formal approach to Newcastle as well as to Guimaraes’ side. The London club sounded out a deal built around a £55m valuation. Newcastle’s answer was unequivocal. Romano reported that the Magpies “closed the doors” on any sale at that figure, refusing to even entertain the notion of losing their midfield leader on those terms.

Brazilian outlet GeGlobo went further, stating that a £55m offer has already been rejected and that Arsenal intend to come back with an improved bid. The pressure is building, but so is the resistance.

For now, Guimaraes is said to be leaving the situation in Newcastle’s hands, respecting the club’s position while interest swirls around him. Arsenal, though, are rarely a one-bid-and-done operation in a chase of this magnitude. The question is not whether they admire the player. It’s how far they are willing to go.

Monga pursuit gathers pace

While Newcastle hold firm over Guimaraes, Arsenal are moving more freely on another front.

Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga has emerged as a key target, and the Premier League champions have already had an initial offer knocked back. This was a classic opening gambit, a “cheeky” bid designed to start the conversation rather than end it.

Talks have now accelerated. According to Football Insider, Arsenal are “confident of finalising a deal” for Monga this summer. The two clubs are in discussions aimed at agreeing a fee without the need for a tribunal, a route both parties would prefer to avoid.

Crucially for Arsenal, the player is understood to be willing to make the move, a significant factor in negotiations of this kind and one that tilts the balance in their favour.

So while the Guimaraes pursuit turns into a high-stakes tug-of-war with Newcastle, the Monga deal looks more like a matter of when, not if. Arsenal’s midfield plan is taking shape on two very different levels: an established Premier League star who will cost a fortune, and a rising talent they hope to mould.

One deal looks close. The other could define their summer.
