Andoni Iraola's Tactical Revolution at Liverpool
Andoni Iraola has not come to Liverpool to ease his way in. With the summer window looming, the new head coach is already shaping the squad he wants, the style he demands and the profiles he trusts.
Announced on Thursday as Arne Slot’s successor, the Spaniard walks into Anfield with a clear idea of how his football should look – and who can deliver it. The shift from Slot to Iraola is not cosmetic. It is tactical, physical, and, if Liverpool back him, personnel-based.
A new blueprint – and three key positions
Liverpool were always heading for a busy summer. Iraola’s arrival has only sharpened the focus.
According to the i Paper, the club are targeting three positions: a winger, a right-back and a midfielder. That list is not accidental. It mirrors the demands of Iraola’s high-energy, front-foot approach – wide forwards who can press and run in behind, full-backs who can cope with big spaces, and midfielders who can live in the chaos.
On the flanks, Iraola is already being linked with a familiar face. Reports suggest he is a “huge fan” of Bournemouth winger Rayan and could look to bring him to Anfield. Any move, though, is likely to be a slow burn. The Brazilian’s £130 million release clause only becomes active in next January’s window, as reported by The Athletic, which makes an immediate deal complicated and extremely expensive.
At right-back, the picture has changed before Iraola has even taken a training session. Denzel Dumfries’ expected move to Real Madrid shuts off one elite option and forces Liverpool to scan the market again. With Trent Alexander-Arnold often pushed into midfield or inverted roles, a more orthodox, athletic right-back would fit neatly into Iraola’s system.
Then there is the midfield. Uncertainty around the futures of Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones has already sparked talk of reinforcements in the engine room. Iraola’s game leans heavily on intensity between the lines; he needs players who can press, break, and still have the quality to use the ball when Liverpool win it back high.
Returning to Bournemouth – and eyeing a United target
The Cherries may not just be a reference point for Iraola’s style. They could become his first hunting ground.
According to The Sun, Liverpool’s new head coach is interested in reuniting with Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, a long-term target for Manchester United. If Liverpool move, it would not only be a statement of faith in Iraola’s judgement, but also a direct challenge to a traditional rival in the market.
Scott, 22, has just delivered a standout season on the south coast, helping Bournemouth qualify for the Europa League for the first time in their history. He flourished under Iraola’s guidance, adapting to the manager’s demands and emerging as one of the Premier League’s most intriguing young midfielders.
There is another thread tying Scott to Anfield. Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes was the man who first took him to Bournemouth from Bristol City in 2023. Hughes knows the player. Iraola knows the player. The fit, on paper, is obvious.
Scott himself has already offered Liverpool fans a glimpse of what to expect from their new coach. Speaking from the United States, where he is currently with the England squad, he said: “He is obviously a great manager; you see what we have done as a club at Bournemouth and how we have progressed over the three seasons he was with us.
“I think the way we press out of possession is very aggressive, maybe similar to the early Klopp teams Liverpool had, that fierce aggressiveness and pressing with the wingers. I would say he is similar to that. Liverpool fans should definitely be so excited.”
Aggression. Wingers pressing high. Echoes of early Jürgen Klopp. Those are not throwaway lines; they are a warning of what is coming. Iraola wants a Liverpool side that suffocates opponents again, that turns Anfield into a place where the ball rarely rests and the tempo rarely drops.
The names linked so far – Rayan, Scott, a new right-back to be found – point in one direction: youth, intensity, and players who can live inside a demanding, high-pressing structure.
The window has not opened yet, but the intent is already clear. Iraola is not waiting for Liverpool to adjust to him. He is moving quickly to build a team that can play his way. The only real question now is how far, and how fast, the club are willing to go with him.
