Al-Hilal went into the summer with one clear intention: land a marquee winger and pay whatever it took to do it. The Saudi giants had ring-fenced a huge budget, and the early plan was simple – bring Raphinha from Barcelona to Riyadh and build around him.

Then the negotiations blew up.

Saudi media figure Mohammed Al-Bukairy detailed how the deal collapsed and how that failure turned into one of the boldest pivots of the window, ending with the capture of Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville.

Raphinha Deal Turns Sour

According to Al-Bukairy, Al-Hilal opened talks with a heavyweight proposal. An official offer of €80 million went in to Barcelona for Raphinha, with a twist: they wanted Joao Cancelo included in the settlement, trimming €20 million off the total through the Portuguese full-back’s involvement.

It was a carefully constructed package. Big money, a clear structure, and a serious show of intent.

Barcelona’s response detonated the mood.

Al-Bukairy says president Joan Laporta’s demands over that €80 million offer pushed tensions to the surface. Instead of closing, the Catalan club pushed to raise the fee to €100 million. For Al-Hilal’s hierarchy, that was the breaking point.

Inside the Saudi club, that push was read as financial “blackmail”, completely out of sync with how they valued the player. Trust evaporated. The reaction was swift: close the Raphinha file, walk away, and find a different star – fast.

The money, though, stayed on the table. It just needed a new target.

Enter Summerville

With talks with Barcelona stalling, Al-Hilal’s recruitment team widened the search. That is when, as Al-Bukairy recounts, one name began to rise above the rest: Crysencio Summerville.

The Dutch winger, by then at West Ham United, had not been the primary objective. The budget had originally been lined up for Raphinha, and even Mason Greenwood was under serious consideration before his move to Fenerbahce. Summerville was the alternative, not the headline act.

Then speed changed everything.

Al-Bukairy describes how Al-Hilal’s decision-makers leaned on what he called “precise sporting intelligence” – close monitoring of rival clubs’ moves across Europe. One trusted source delivered a critical warning: Roma were on the verge of snapping up Summerville for just €50 million.

That was the trigger.

Al-Hilal moved aggressively. The Saudi club, known locally as “the Leader”, put a lavish €80 million offer on the table, instantly outmuscling Roma by €30 million. It was a financial surge designed not only to win the race, but to end it on the spot.

It worked.

One Hour to Seal the Deal

Al-Bukairy says that huge jump in the fee left West Ham with only one logical answer. The English club accepted immediately. From there, the formalities barely took any time at all.

The final procedures and initial signatures, he revealed, were wrapped up in less than an hour. In that short window, Al-Hilal turned a collapsed negotiation with Barcelona into the capture of what Al-Bukairy called a “luxurious Dutch winger”.

This was not blind spending. The club had been tracking Summerville closely, especially with the Netherlands national team.

A Star on the Rise

At 24, Summerville arrives in Riyadh as one of Europe’s most eye-catching emerging attackers. His performances with the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup thrust him into the global spotlight. He contributed to five goals in just six matches, becoming one of the surprises of the tournament and a sudden obsession for scouts across the continent.

That surge on the international stage pushed him onto the shortlist of almost every major club. Al-Hilal didn’t just join the race; they ended it with their financial muscle.

The numbers from his last season before the move underline why the Saudis were willing to go so high. In 2023–2024 with Leeds United, Summerville delivered a standout campaign: 21 goals, 10 assists, and the Player of the Season award in the English Championship.

For Simone Inzaghi, Summerville is more than a statement signing. He is a tactical weapon.
