Ajax Sign Femke Liefting on Season-Long Loan from Chelsea

Ajax have turned to a familiar face to strengthen their last line of defence, bringing Chelsea goalkeeper Femke Liefting back to the Azerion Vrouwen Eredivisie on a season-long loan for 2026/27.

The Dutch club confirmed the deal on their official channels on Friday morning, securing a 21-year-old who knows the league, knows the country and badly needs minutes.

A career that accelerated quickly – then stalled

Liefting’s rise in Dutch football was sharp. She broke through at VV Alkmaar, then crossed to neighbours AZ in 2023, where her form pushed her into the spotlight. Within a year, Chelsea came calling.

The Barclays Women’s Super League champions signed her in January 2025, seeing long-term potential in the young Dutch keeper. For a player still learning the craft, it was a huge step, and it came early.

England, though, has not been straightforward. Foot and hip injuries disrupted her rhythm, stripped away continuity and halted the momentum that had carried her from Alkmaar to London. She did manage to pick up valuable game time on loan at Newcastle United last season, but it was stop-start, never quite the extended run a young goalkeeper craves.

Ajax offer a reset

This move is about that rhythm. About playing every week, not just training at a superclub.

Back in the Vrouwen Eredivisie, Liefting returns to a league where she has already shown she can excel. Ajax, chasing domestic honours and European relevance, are betting that a fit, confident Liefting can quickly re-establish herself as one of the standout young goalkeepers in the country.

Technical manager Dolf Roks made the club’s thinking clear.

“Femke is a talented goalkeeper who has already proven her quality in the Vrouwen Eredivisie. She also gained valuable experience at the highest level during her time at Chelsea, where she continued to develop. We are delighted that she will add experience and quality to our squad for the coming season,” he said.

For Ajax, it is a low-risk, high-upside deal: a keeper with league experience, schooled at Chelsea, still years away from her peak.

For Liefting, it is more personal. Dutch youth caps on her CV, a major club contract in her pocket, but a recent spell defined more by rehab than by clean sheets. She needs games, pressure, mistakes, saves – the full noise of competitive football again.

Chelsea keep the long view

Crucially, this is a loan, not a goodbye. Liefting remains under contract at Chelsea until the summer of 2028, a clear sign the London club still view her as part of their long-term planning.

If she plays regularly and thrives in Amsterdam, Chelsea get back a goalkeeper sharper, tougher and battle-tested. If she struggles, Ajax still have depth, and Liefting still has time on her side.

For now, though, the story is simple. A talented Dutch goalkeeper comes home, with a point to prove and a season to reset everything that stalled in England.

How she uses this year at Ajax may shape the rest of her career.
