Arsenal Targets Ezri Konsa Amid Saliba Fitness Concerns
Arsenal’s defensive plans have been thrown into sharp focus, and Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa is back on their radar.
William Saliba, the cornerstone of Mikel Arteta’s back line, was forced off during France’s World Cup semi-final defeat after recent struggles with a back problem. The extent of the issue is still being assessed, and it is not yet clear whether the 25-year-old will need a spell on the sidelines. For a club built on stability from the back, that uncertainty bites.
So Arsenal are moving.
According to The Guardian, the club have expressed firm interest in Konsa, who has grown into one of the Premier League’s most reliable central defenders and recently broken into the England setup. His ability to defend aggressively in space and play out from the back makes him a natural stylistic fit for Arteta’s system, and his familiarity with the league only strengthens the case.
Focus on Villa
Arsenal’s focus on Villa does not end there.
The north London side are also expected to table an offer for Morgan Rogers, Konsa’s club and international team-mate. The 23-year-old attacker has long sat high on Arsenal’s recruitment list, and with his World Cup involvement winding down, the club are said to be preparing a formal bid. Rogers offers versatility across the frontline, something Arteta has consistently valued as he looks to rotate and reshape his attacking patterns without losing fluency.
Another Wide Option
Another wide option is edging closer.
Arsenal have agreed a deal with Club Brugge to bring winger Cristos Tzolis to the Emirates, with only the final details separating the move from completion. The Greek forward would add another direct, goal-minded presence to a squad already rich in attacking profiles, hinting at a summer of genuine depth-building rather than simple headline-chasing.
Competition at the Top
There is competition, though, at the very top of the market.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has once again underlined his desire to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, a player Arsenal also admire. The Catalan club’s stance keeps the race for the Argentine sharp and political, and any move from Arsenal would have to cut through both financial and sporting pressure from one of Europe’s traditional giants.
Transfer Carousel
Across the Premier League, the transfer carousel is spinning hard.
Aston Villa, while fending off interest in key players, are close to sealing a £38m deal for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, a move that would further harden Unai Emery’s options in the centre of the pitch. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Villa have also agreed personal terms with AC Milan left-back Pervis Estupinan, signalling a clear push to deepen their squad on multiple fronts.
Nottingham Forest's Intent
Nottingham Forest are ready to spend big again.
They are preparing a £45m bid for Spurs midfielder Lucas Bergvall after an initial offer for the Sweden international was rejected, according to BBC Sport. Forest still want to bring in another midfielder alongside Bergvall, a statement of intent from a club intent on climbing away from the league’s lower reaches and into something more stable, maybe even ambitious.
Newcastle's Goalkeeping Plans
Newcastle United, meanwhile, are looking at the last line of defence.
The Daily Mail report that they are in talks over moves for two goalkeepers: Brighton’s Carl Rushworth and Manchester City’s James Trafford. It is a clear signal that the goalkeeping position is under review on Tyneside, with competition and succession planning both very much in play.
Arsenal’s own summer, though, may hinge on one scan, one verdict on Saliba’s back. If the news is bad, the move for Konsa could quickly shift from contingency planning to urgent business.
