Tom Heaton set for new Manchester United deal

Manchester United are closing in on a new one-year deal for Tom Heaton, keeping the veteran goalkeeper at Old Trafford for another season as the club prepares for its Champions League return.

Heaton, 40, was due to see his contract expire this summer and looked a genuine candidate to move on, having made just three appearances since rejoining United in 2021. Yet his influence has never really been measured in minutes.

Inside Carrington, he is one of the voices that carries.

Signed initially as experienced cover and a steady hand in the dressing room, Heaton has become exactly that: a training-ground standard-setter, a bridge between generations and a reliable presence behind the scenes as United attempt to reshape a squad for the demands of Europe and a new era under Michael Carrick.

The Sun report that United have reached an agreement that will keep Heaton at the club for a further 12 months. It follows the one-year extension he signed last summer, another short-term deal that underlines how the club continue to value his role even as his on-pitch contribution remains limited.

The respect he commands among senior players is clear. Casemiro, who is set to leave United when his own contract runs down at the end of the season, has previously gone out of his way to highlight Heaton’s importance.

“He is very important. Very important for us,” Casemiro said on Rio Ferdinand Presents on YouTube, lifting the curtain slightly on the dynamic in the dressing room. “He pushes the training, he pushes in the game, of course, he doesn’t play, but he pushes every time. For me, everyone needs this guy; he helps the room so much.”

Casemiro’s departure and Heaton’s expected renewal neatly capture where United are right now: one high-profile name moving on as part of a wider reset, another largely unseen figure kept on because of the culture he helps maintain.

The work on the squad will not stop with those decisions. United are preparing for a busy summer window, with Champions League football demanding both depth and quality. A deal is already in place for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with the package worth £38.8 million — £35 million up front and a further £3.8 million in add-ons.

That move signals a clear intention to refresh the midfield. The club are also being linked with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes as they look to add further energy and versatility in the middle of the pitch.

Plenty more calls lie ahead. Outgoings, loans, young players stepping up, senior figures staying one more year. Heaton falls firmly into that last category: not a headline signing, not a regular starter, but a deliberate choice as United try to blend new faces with steady, experienced professionals.

For Carrick, preparing for his first full season as permanent manager, having a goalkeeper who knows the club, understands the standards and accepts his role is no small advantage. United’s summer will be judged on big-money deals and bold moves. Yet sometimes the quiet renewals say just as much about where a team is heading.
