Rio Ngumoha's Transfer Saga: From Liverpool to Bayern Munich Falls Apart

Rio Ngumoha’s proposed switch from Liverpool to Bayern Munich has dramatically fallen apart, despite a “full verbal agreement” reportedly being in place with the German giants.

The 17-year-old winger, one of the few bright sparks in Liverpool’s troubled 2025/26 season, had emerged as a surprise priority target for Vincent Kompany as Bayern searched for a left-sided attacker. Now, that plan is on ice.

From Liverpool lifeline to Bayern’s “secret candidate”

Ngumoha arrived at Anfield from Chelsea as a highly rated academy talent, but last season he stepped out of the youth ranks and into the spotlight. In a campaign that drifted badly under Arne Slot, the teenager’s direct running and fearlessness offered rare moments of electricity. Many around the club felt he had earned more minutes than he received.

That sense of untapped potential has fed into the excitement around new head coach Andoni Iraola. Liverpool fans have been eager to see what a front-foot, aggressive system might do for a young winger who thrives in space and one‑v‑one duels.

Just as anticipation was building, Bayern moved.

Kompany’s side, still reshaping their attack and hunting competition for Luis Díaz, had already been knocked back in their pursuit of Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona in a £69m deal. Attention then swung to Ngumoha.

David Ornstein reported that Bayern were exploring a move, making the 17-year-old their primary target for the left flank. Crucially, Liverpool’s stance was firm: not for sale, and intent on strengthening their forward line, not stripping it back.

Verbal agreement in place – then the deal dies

Behind the scenes, though, the story accelerated. German journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed that Bayern had been working on Ngumoha for weeks, keeping him as a “secret candidate” while they assessed other options.

According to Plettenberg, the talks paid off. Bayern and Ngumoha’s camp reached a full verbal agreement on Tuesday, 26 May. Kompany had personally spoken with the youngster and signed off on the move. For Bayern, Ngumoha was not a token youth signing; he was given “absolute priority” as a back-up to Díaz alongside the club’s ongoing pursuit of Gordon.

Then it all collapsed.

Plettenberg reported that on Thursday the proposed transfer fell through “for the time being”. No fee had been agreed between the clubs, and Liverpool’s hard line appears to have held. With Bayern also exploring deals for other attacking options such as Ibrahim Brown and Ismael Saibari, attention may now drift elsewhere.

Liverpool’s unexpected win

For Liverpool, this breakdown could prove significant. Earlier this year, reports from within the club suggested there was a strong belief that Ngumoha could “explode” next season, potentially saving them a sizeable outlay in the transfer market. A new contract for the teenager has also been under discussion.

The collapse of Bayern’s move hands Iraola an early boost. Instead of losing one of the squad’s most exciting young pieces before a ball is kicked, he is likely to walk into pre-season with Ngumoha very much part of his plans.

Bayern had seen a future impact sub and long-term project. Liverpool might now see something more: a homegrown winger on the brink of a genuine breakthrough, staying put just as a new era at Anfield begins.
