MLS All-Star XI Revealed: Star Power and Storylines

The MLS All-Star XI has landed, and it looks every bit as heavyweight as the league promised.

A blend of fan votes, media voices, and player input has produced a starting side rich in star power, storylines, and a few carefully chosen wildcards.

Between the posts, Brian Schwake of Nashville SC gets the nod, a reward for his sharp rise and calm presence in goal. In front of him, the back line offers both bite and experience: Anthony Markanich of Minnesota United at left back, Chicago Fire’s Mbekezeli Mbokazi alongside Charlotte FC veteran Tim Ream in the middle, and Nashville’s Andy Najar on the right.

Ream’s selection jumps off the page. This is his second All-Star honor, but the first in 15 years. He last made the team in 2011 as a young defender with New York Red Bulls. To return now, in a different city and a different era for MLS, underlines the longevity and quiet quality of his career.

Midfield

In midfield, Vancouver Whitecaps’ Sebastian Berhalter anchors the side as the defensive shield, tasked with cleaning up and kick-starting attacks. Ahead of him sit two of the league’s most intriguing creative sparks: Real Salt Lake’s Zavier Gozo and Nashville’s Hany Mukhtar. Mukhtar’s pedigree is well known, a proven match-winner in MLS. Gozo, though, brings a different kind of intrigue.

The young playmaker is already being linked with a move to Aston Villa, and his inclusion here feels like a statement. This is not just a nod to potential. It is recognition that he is already shaping games in a league full of established names.

Forward Line

Up front, the front three reads like a marketing dream and a tactical nightmare for any defense. Chicago Fire striker Hugo Cuypers leads the line, flanked by Son Heung-Min of LAFC and Inter Miami’s Leo Messi. Son’s selection comes as his first in MLS, a reminder that had he arrived earlier last summer, he would likely have been penciled into this team long before the ballots opened. Messi, of course, needs no introduction.

In total, six players are first-time All-Stars: Gozo, Son, Markanich, Schwake, Cuypers, and Mbokazi. It is a fresh layer added to a team built around some of the most recognizable faces in world football.

There is, however, a shadow hanging over the glamour. Last year’s All-Star spectacle stumbled into controversy when Messi and Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba, both selected to the squad, never showed up for the game. The fallout was swift. The league suspended both players for one match as punishment.

MLS has made it clear that the rule still stands. As the league reminded in a statement: any player who fails to participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval is ineligible for their club’s next match. The message is simple: if you’re picked, you play, or you sit.

Once again, MLS’s best will face the top talents from Liga MX, a rivalry that has grown into a showcase of regional power and pride. Liga MX has yet to unveil its own All-Star list, but last year those names dropped in mid-June, roughly a month before kickoff, and a similar timeline would not surprise anyone inside either league.

This year’s edition will unfold at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on July 29, a stage built for stars, storylines, and a few reputations to be made—or remade—in one night.
