Mary Earps Joins London City: A Statement Move
Mary Earps has never been one for half measures. When she jumps, she jumps all in. Her move to London City is exactly that – a statement, not a step.
The former international standout has thrown her weight behind the club’s long-term project, drawn in by what she describes as a rare alignment of values, ambition and vision. For Earps, this isn’t just another contract. It’s a cause.
“I’m over the moon to join this club and I’m really looking forward to it. I feel the club aligns with what I stand for. I can’t wait to get started and to get down to business,” she said, outlining a decision built as much on principle as on footballing logic.
A Project With Purpose
Earps talks about London City in the language of identity and intent. The pull wasn’t only the pitch, but the platform.
“The club’s values represent what I want to represent and they are passionate about what I want to achieve and change the game in a positive way,” she explained. Each conversation with the hierarchy, she said, left her wanting more, reinforcing the sense that this was the right fit at the right time.
The vision is concrete, not abstract. A new training facility sits at the heart of the club’s next phase, a physical marker of where London City believe they are heading.
“The vision and ambition, including the new training facility is incredible and I’m looking forward to seeing that develop, it shows what our owner Michele (Kang) and everyone at the club want to do in terms of really going for it. It’s about putting a marker down and saying we want to be competitive in a short space of time.”
Those are not the words of someone easing into the twilight of a career. They are the words of a goalkeeper still obsessed with standards.
Raising the Bar in Goal
Earps arrives determined to maintain the elite level that made her one of the game’s most recognisable keepers. She sees London City not as a comfort zone, but as a fresh challenge in a squad she believes is on the rise.
Central to that is her partnership with fellow goalkeeper Elene Lete. Rather than a rivalry, Earps is already framing it as a shared push for improvement.
“I’m looking forward to working alongside Elene (Lete) and the goalkeeping unit. Elene made some great saves and interventions last season. Hopefully we can bounce off each other and work hard and enjoy it.”
The message is clear: no complacency, no coasting. Competition, collaboration, and a relentless drive to get better.
Connection With the Stands
Earps has always thrived on energy from the terraces, and she wasted no time addressing the supporters she will soon be playing in front of.
“My message to the fans is that I’m really excited to get started and make some memories together, I can’t wait to play in front of you all,” she said, already looking beyond the training ground to matchdays and moments that matter.
She spoke too of immersing herself in the club’s fabric – not just the squad, but the style, the staff, the culture.
“I’m looking forward to getting to know the players, the staff, the style of play and club culture and trying to give everything I can to help the club achieve its collective goals and be as successful as possible.”
Eyes on the Table, Not Just the Project
Romantic talk of values is one thing. Surviving and thriving in the WSL is another. Earps isn’t blind to the scale of the task.
“I feel I still have so much left to give to the game, and that's exactly why I chose London City. It won’t be easy, the WSL is extremely competitive,” she said, acknowledging the unforgiving nature of the league.
London City’s recent history underlines that reality. A “brilliant” 2025-26 campaign saw them finish mid-table in their first season at this level – impressive, but only a starting point in Earps’ eyes.
“The team had a brilliant 2025-26 season finishing mid-table in their first season, now it’s about climbing the table and working towards finishing as high as possible.”
This is the crux of her move. London City want to stop being a good story and start becoming a serious problem for the established order. Earps has signed up to make that leap happen.
She comes not as a passenger on a rising tide, but as one of the figures expected to drive it.
