Manchester United Target Liverpool Striker Vincent Joseph
More than 60 years have passed since Manchester United and Liverpool last traded a player directly. The rivalry has only hardened since, but the battle between the clubs has simply shifted to a different arena: youth recruitment.
United’s successful swoop for Ethan Ennis from Liverpool’s academy in 2021 was a reminder that, while senior transfers across the divide are off the table, the youth ranks remain very much open season. Ennis turned down a contract on Merseyside to move to Carrington and, after loan spells with Doncaster Rovers and Fleetwood Town, he is still on United’s books.
Now the Old Trafford club are attempting to repeat the trick.
United move for Liverpool striker Vincent Joseph
According to The Secret Scout, a well-regarded voice on youth football and transfers, Liverpool’s 16-year-old striker Vincent Joseph “looks set to leave” Anfield after being omitted from the club’s latest list of scholars.
That omission has not gone unnoticed. The same report states that Manchester United “hold strong interest” in the teenager, whose blend of physical presence and sharp link-up play has marked him out as a genuine No 9 prospect in an era short of classic centre-forwards.
Joseph, already capped by England at U16 level, made just two appearances in the U18 Premier League last season. He still managed to score three goals, a return that has only heightened the sense that a major academy talent is on the move.
The Secret Scout summed up the market’s view succinctly: “Interesting to see where he ends up. Not many top number 9s around. He will be in demand.”
They are not alone in that assessment. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have both sent scouts to watch Joseph on multiple occasions, underlining how quickly his name has travelled across the continent. If United are to prise him away from Liverpool, they will have to beat off competition from two of Germany’s most aggressive operators in the youth market.
Bayern, United also tracking Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong
Joseph is not the only emerging talent drawing admiring glances from Old Trafford and Bavaria.
Both Manchester United and Bayern Munich are understood to be among the clubs monitoring Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong. The 20-year-old, a towering presence at the back, has been flagged as a player of serious long-term potential, with The Peoples Person recently relaying that he has appeared on United’s radar.
Chelsea, though, have taken a firm stance. The London club are believed to have rejected approaches from several unnamed sides, treating Acheampong as effectively untouchable at this stage of his development.
INEOS era shows its hand
Much of the noise around INEOS’s arrival and United’s return to the Champions League has centred on marquee signings and headline names. The pursuit of Joseph and the admiration for Acheampong tell a slightly different story.
United’s hierarchy, reshaped under INEOS, look determined not only to refresh the first team but to restock the pipeline beneath it with high-ceiling prospects. Winning the race for Joseph, especially from Liverpool’s academy and under the noses of Bayern and Dortmund, would send a pointed message about where they intend to compete in the years ahead.
