Manchester United's Ambitious Summer Plans: Igor Thiago Emerges as Target

Manchester United are preparing for a summer of upheaval. New power in the boardroom, a manager fresh from a top-four finish, and a transfer budget designed to drag the club back into the sharp end of the Champions League and a genuine Premier League title race.

And right in the middle of that plan, a surprise name has emerged: Igor Thiago.

United rip up the striker blueprint

INEOS are ready to commit around £200m on reinforcements, with further funds expected from player sales. The spine of the squad is under review. The midfield, in particular, will be ripped open and rebuilt.

Casemiro is heading out. Manuel Ugarte is available for the right offer. At least two new midfielders are on the agenda, possibly three. The deal for Atalanta’s Ederson is racing towards completion and is set to become the first signing of the Michael Carrick era.

But the rebuild does not stop there.

United also want a new left-back and another centre-forward, even after spending £73m last summer on Benjamin Sesko. The plan, initially, was clear: bring in an older, battle-hardened striker who could ease the load on the 23-year-old and act as a guide as much as a rival.

Then Thiago’s name landed on the desk.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, United are ready to make an “exception” to their search for experience by targeting the 24-year-old Brentford forward, whose form last season forced the rest of the league to sit up.

He finished as the Premier League’s second-highest scorer, behind only Erling Haaland, with 22 goals in 38 games. Power, presence, and a ruthless edge in the box. Those numbers alone explain why United are paying attention.

A move that hinges on an exit

There is a catch. Thiago will not arrive unless another forward leaves.

United are open to selling Joshua Zirkzee, with a return to Serie A already being discussed. Any fee for the Dutchman would be funnelled straight into a move for Thiago, turning one promising attacker into another with a more proven Premier League record.

Brentford, predictably, are not rolling out a red carpet for negotiations. They are expected to demand around £70m (€81m, $94m) to even consider doing business, a fee designed to test how serious United really are.

Within Old Trafford, the belief is that he is worth the fight. Technical director Jason Wilcox is understood to view Thiago as an investment with long-term upside, and Jacobs told The United Stand that United are willing to “go the extra mile” to try to get him.

At this stage, the interest is described as early and “player-led” – United sounding out options, exploring the market for strikers who do not fit the veteran profile they first had in mind. Thiago sits firmly in that small group of exceptions.

Goals, pedigree and a rising profile

The numbers back up the intrigue. Thiago has 90 goals for club and country across his senior career, a tally that underlines why he is no longer seen as a Brentford curiosity but as a fully-fledged elite-level target.

United know his threat first-hand. He has scored twice in three appearances for the Bees against them, a record that tends to linger in the memory of decision-makers. When a player repeatedly hurts you, you pay attention.

His form has not gone unnoticed at international level either. The Brazil striker, capped three times, has forced his way into Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad and has matched that three-cap tally with two goals for his country. That stage, and that coach, will only sharpen his reputation.

And that presents another problem for United: they are not alone.

Chelsea have already been credited with interest, as reported by transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey. Thiago signed a new long-term contract with Brentford earlier this year, but that deal looks more like a position of strength for the club than a guarantee he will stay.

Bailey believes there is no certainty Thiago will still be at the Gtech Community Stadium when next season kicks off. A strong World Cup, and the queue at Brentford’s door will only grow.

United’s recruitment team now face a familiar dilemma. Pay a premium for a striker whose value is climbing by the month, or watch a rival move first and potentially solve a problem that has haunted Old Trafford for years.
