Manchester United Targets Ederson and Mateus Fernandes for Midfield Rebuild
Manchester United are preparing for a summer of upheaval in midfield, with the club driving forward deals for Atalanta’s Ederson and West Ham prospect Mateus Fernandes as they move away from the Casemiro era.
Casemiro, outstanding across this campaign but now 34, will leave on a free transfer after United opted not to renew his contract. That decision, combined with the planned sale of Manuel Ugarte after an underwhelming spell following his £50.5 million move, has forced a full reset in the centre of the pitch.
The message from Old Trafford is clear: legs, energy, and longevity over reputation.
Anderson setback sharpens United’s focus
United had pushed hard for Elliot Anderson, only to see Manchester City close in on their top target. Losing that particular tug-of-war has sharpened their focus elsewhere.
Attention has turned to Ederson, the driving force in Atalanta’s midfield, and Mateus Fernandes, one of the most intriguing young talents in the Premier League. Both are now firmly in United’s sights.
talkSPORT report that United are “closing in” on Ederson, with negotiations with Atalanta at an advanced stage. The fee is expected to reach up to £43m, and the Brazilian has already given the green light to a five-year deal at Old Trafford.
That move is viewed as the first major piece of the rebuild. The club want Ederson’s intensity, his ability to press and break lines, at the heart of a new-look engine room.
United move to the front for Mateus Fernandes
The second phase of the plan is Mateus Fernandes.
According to CaughtOffside, United now “lead the race” for the 21-year-old and have emerged as the “strongest contenders” after accelerating talks with his representatives. A number of European heavyweights are circling.
- Arsenal are monitoring him as a potential successor to Christian Norgaard.
- Chelsea, Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are also tracking his situation.
United, though, have done the most groundwork and currently sit in pole position. The player’s own ambitions help. Fernandes is keen to play Champions League football for United and is attracted by the idea of lining up alongside compatriot Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford.
Earlier reports suggested a fee of around £80m would be required. CaughtOffside now indicate that West Ham’s relegation has changed the landscape, with the midfielder believed to be available for €50–60m (£43–52m).
For a club attempting to refresh an ageing core without breaching financial limits, that shift in price matters.
Two in – and maybe a third
Ederson is expected to arrive first, with United then poised to make what has been described as a “serious” move for Mateus Fernandes once the Brazilian’s deal is sealed. Both transfers are said to be edging closer as United push to have their business advanced early.
And they may not stop at two.
According to the Daily Mail’s Manchester United correspondent Chris Wheeler, the club are also planning a £20m move for an additional midfield option, with Southampton’s Shea Charles among the targets under consideration.
Casemiro departing, Ugarte on the market, Anderson slipping away to City, and potentially three new faces coming in. United are not tinkering with their midfield.
They are tearing it up and starting again.
