Manchester United's £80m Move for Mateus Fernandes as Carrick Reshapes Midfield

Manchester United’s rebuild under Michael Carrick is starting to take on a clear shape – and it is not coming cheap.

With Champions League football returning to Old Trafford next season and Casemiro already out of the door, United are driving hard into the market for midfield power. One deal, for Atalanta’s Ederson, is understood to be in place at around £38.8million. The next could cost more than double.

United circle £80m Mateus Fernandes deal

United have made their move for West Ham playmaker Mateus Fernandes, as they look to add a second central midfielder alongside Ederson.

The Brazilian’s arrival from Atalanta is expected to give Carrick a dynamic presence in the middle of the pitch, but the club hierarchy are pushing for another injection of quality. ESPN report that United have already contacted West Ham about Fernandes, who impressed in his debut season at the London Stadium.

West Ham’s relegation has changed the landscape. Dropping out of the Premier League is forecast to punch a £100m hole in the Hammers’ finances, and that pressure is likely to drag several key players into the shop window. The Times report that West Ham have set an £80m price tag on Fernandes, bracing themselves for bids.

United are not alone. Arsenal are also monitoring the Portugal international after his standout first campaign in England. His blend of vision, energy and ball-carrying has quickly made him one of the more coveted midfielders in the division, and any auction will be fierce.

For United, the logic is simple. Casemiro’s departure has left a sizeable gap in both presence and experience at the base of midfield. Carrick, a former United metronome himself, knows the cost of getting that area wrong. Ederson plus Fernandes would represent a bold, expensive reset – and a clear signal that United intend to compete properly on their Champions League return.

The question now is whether they are prepared to go all the way to West Ham’s £80m demand to win the race.

Maguire turns to the microphone

While United’s recruitment team haggle over millions, Harry Maguire is preparing for a very different kind of summer.

Left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup, the centre-back will not be on the pitch. Instead, he will be on the airwaves. Maguire is set to join Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards on The Rest is Football podcast throughout the tournament.

The trio of former England internationals will broadcast from a studio overlooking Times Square in New York, with Maguire joining them across a 40-episode run. It marks a notable step into the media world for the defender, whose international career has stalled at a difficult time.

This is the second successive major tournament Maguire has missed. Injury kept him out of Euro 2024; now Tuchel has opted to move on without him for the World Cup. For a player who once felt undroppable for his country, the shift has been stark.

His new role offers something different: a chance to lend a current player’s insight to one of football’s most popular shows, and to reshape how he is seen away from the pitch.

As United reshape their midfield and Maguire explores life behind the microphone, the club’s summer carries a clear tension. Old faces are moving into new roles, new signings are being lined up at huge cost, and the stakes – with Europe looming – could hardly be higher.
