Manchester City Bid for Elliot Anderson Rejected by Nottingham Forest
Manchester City have had their first move for Elliot Anderson knocked back, but the Premier League champions are not expected to walk away.
Nottingham Forest have rejected an opening offer for the 23-year-old midfielder, whose future has become one of the defining transfer stories of the summer. Anderson, fresh from a standout season at the City Ground, is understood to be leaning towards a switch to the Etihad rather than Manchester United, as reported last week.
The sense around Forest is clear: Anderson is likely to leave. The only questions are where he goes and how high the fee climbs.
Record-breaking numbers on the table
Any deal will not be cheap. A potential transfer is already being framed in industry circles as one that could break the British transfer record, eclipsing the £105m Arsenal paid West Ham for Declan Rice in 2023. Forest know exactly what they have on their hands and are in no rush to cash in on the Newcastle academy graduate.
Anderson’s stock has never been higher. He delivered a stellar campaign in midfield for Forest and has been rewarded with a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. While he prepares for the tournament, the negotiations will continue in the background, club to club, number to number.
City’s admiration for Anderson is not new. Scouts and analysts have tracked his rise from his Newcastle youth days through his emergence at Forest. Now, with an opening bid rejected, the decision for City is whether to return quickly with an improved offer or test Forest’s resolve over time.
City’s midfield reset
The pursuit of Anderson comes at a moment of quiet but significant transition at the Etihad.
Captain Bernardo Silva is heading for the exit, leaving a sizeable gap in City’s midfield structure and dressing-room hierarchy. Anderson has been identified as the leading candidate to help reshape that unit, a player whose energy, versatility and end-product fit the champions’ evolving profile.
He is not the only name on their board. Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali is another midfielder City rate highly. Reports indicate the Italy international has been monitored as a longer-term option, a player they have tracked with a view to future windows as much as the present one.
The moving parts do not stop there. Nico Gonzalez, who missed out on Spain’s World Cup squad and slipped down Pep Guardiola’s pecking order last season, could leave if a suitable offer arrives. His departure would further clear space in a midfield that is being quietly rebuilt while the spotlight falls on Anderson.
Full-back search adds to busy summer
City’s recruitment drive is not limited to the middle of the pitch. The champions are also in the market for a right-back after Matheus Nunes, 28, impressed when converted from midfield to that role this season.
Nunes adapted superbly, but City want a natural full-back, younger and with the profile to grow into the position over several years. The idea is clear: a specialist to complement Nunes’ flexibility, not replace it.
So the picture is this: a record-breaking bid on the horizon for Anderson, alternative midfield targets under review, a potential departure in Gonzalez, and a new right-back on the shopping list.
Forest have made their stance clear with that first rejection. City have made theirs by coming to the table early. The next offer, and Anderson’s final decision between Manchester’s two giants, will say plenty about where the balance of power lies in this window.
