Manchester City Faces Challenges in Pursuit of Anderson

Manchester City’s move for Anderson has hit its first wall – and Nottingham Forest have made sure it’s a solid one.

Pep Guardiola’s side have identified the 23-year-old as a priority option to refresh the heart of their midfield, drawn to his blend of energy, tactical intelligence and ability to slot into a demanding, possession-heavy system. City see more than a squad piece here. They see a long-term pillar.

Forest see something similar. That’s the problem.

Forest dig in

According to The Athletic, City’s opening approach has already been knocked back, with Forest making it clear they have no intention of letting one of Vitor Pereira’s key players leave on the cheap. There is no financial fire sale at the City Ground, no pressure from the balance sheet. If Anderson goes, it will be on Forest’s terms.

Those terms are steep. Forest have reportedly told City it would take a huge offer just to tempt them to the negotiating table. They invested heavily to bring him from Newcastle and now regard him as central to their long-term project under Pereira.

The message from the hierarchy is blunt: wealthier rivals can circle if they like, but unless their valuation is met in full, Anderson stays put. That stance is not just for City’s benefit. It doubles as a warning shot to any other club watching his rise.

A rapid rise in stature

Anderson’s stock has soared since leaving St James’ Park. At Forest he has gone from promising talent to automatic pick, driving games from deep and setting the tone without the ball with his intensity and work rate.

Last season underlined his importance. In the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, he featured in all 38 matches, starting 37 of them – the kind of durability and trust that managers build systems around, not benches.

That club form has carried onto the international stage. His progress has reportedly drawn increasing attention across Europe, and he has been named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup, a marker of how far and how fast his reputation has grown.

For City, that trajectory is exactly the attraction. They do not just view Anderson as another body in rotation, but as a potential future leader of their midfield, someone who could eventually take on the kind of responsibility that has defined their great sides of the past decade.

City at a crossroads

Now comes the decision. City can push again, test Forest’s resolve with an improved bid, or walk away and move onto alternative midfield targets. Anderson fits the profile they want, ticks the tactical and physical boxes, and already has Premier League mileage in his legs. But Forest’s asking price will examine just how much they want him this summer.

Forest, for their part, are focused on stability. Retaining core players is central to their plan, and Anderson sits right at the heart of that strategy. He remains a Forest player, still driving things from the City Ground, still central to Pereira’s vision.

Yet interest from one of Europe’s superpowers rarely fades quietly. As the window wears on, the question lingers: do City decide he is worth the “mammoth” outlay – or does Anderson become the standard-bearer for Forest’s refusal to be pushed around in the market?
