Liverpool Firmly Reject Bayern's Interest in Rio Ngumoha
Liverpool have drawn a thick red line through Bayern Munich’s interest in Rio Ngumoha – and made it clear the teenage winger’s future lies at Anfield, not the Allianz Arena.
The 17-year-old, fresh from a breakout 2025/26 campaign and his first senior England cap, has become the latest Premier League prodigy to catch Bayern’s eye. Reports last week suggested the German champions were preparing a major move, with claims in some quarters that terms had even been agreed with the player’s camp.
Inside Liverpool, that talk has gone down like a lead balloon.
Anfield fury at Bayern links
Ngumoha’s numbers last season were modest on paper – three goal contributions in just 551 Premier League minutes – but those inside the club view those flashes as the start of something far bigger. He is seen as one of the crown jewels of Liverpool’s next generation, a player earmarked for significantly more first-team minutes this season.
So when Bayern’s interest surfaced, the response on Merseyside was swift and uncompromising. Sources told TEAMtalk that Liverpool have no intention of selling and were angered that news of Bayern’s admiration had leaked at all.
That stance has now been underlined publicly. Speaking to the BBC, journalist Lewis Bower relayed the message he has received from within Anfield’s inner circle: there is no scenario in which Liverpool sanction a summer exit for Ngumoha.
Bower referenced a trusted contact in academy football and sports consultancy, stressing that, from what he has been told, there is “absolutely no chance” of a deal happening. The line from Liverpool is blunt: Ngumoha is not for sale.
Inside the club, the reaction to suggestions Bayern had already agreed terms has gone beyond irritation. Transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey reported “deeply unhappy” voices at Anfield and even “outrage” among senior figures over claims that the teenager’s long-term future might lie anywhere other than Merseyside.
Kompany may be a confirmed admirer. Bayern’s scouting department may be convinced. Liverpool, though, are equally certain that the Bundesliga side will not cross any lines with an illegal or covert approach – and that, either way, they are wasting their time.
Contract plan already in motion
Part of Liverpool’s confidence comes from the groundwork already laid. Ngumoha only signed a new three-year deal last September, tying him to the club until 2028 after his arrival from Chelsea in 2024.
That agreement was never viewed as the final word.
Under current regulations, 17-year-olds can sign contracts of no longer than three years. Liverpool knew that when they put the deal in front of Ngumoha and his representatives. The plan, baked in from the start, was to revisit his terms as soon as he approached his 18th birthday.
That moment is almost here. Ngumoha turns 18 on 29 August, and Anfield sources are already preparing the next stage: an upgraded contract, a significant wage rise and a framework that reflects his growing importance in the club’s sporting project.
Bailey reports that Liverpool’s focus is “entirely” on securing the winger’s long-term future, not even entertaining discussions about a possible exit. Inside the recruitment and academy departments, Ngumoha is spoken of as one of the most exciting young players on the books, a talent around whom medium-term plans are being built.
The England Under-19 international has already ticked off milestones at a pace that tends to attract predators from abroad. Premier League impact off the bench. A senior England debut. A reputation, now, that stretches across Europe.
Bayern have noticed. So have plenty of others.
Liverpool’s answer, though, is simple: look elsewhere. The next contract on Ngumoha’s table is expected to come from Anfield – and it is that signature, not a transfer saga, that will shape the next chapter of his rise.
