Jose Mourinho Closing In on Real Madrid Return After 13 Years
Jose Mourinho is closing in on a dramatic return to Real Madrid, with the Portuguese coach in final negotiations to take over at the Bernabeu 13 years after his first spell in charge.
The 63-year-old has emerged not just as the leading contender, but as the only coach Real Madrid are currently speaking to about the job. Club sources describe him as the clear favourite to replace Alvaro Arbeloa, who stepped up in January after Xabi Alonso’s departure and now looks set to make way for a far more familiar face.
Perez turns back to Mourinho
Florentino Perez did not take long to revisit an old idea. Just two days after Alonso walked away from the club, the Real Madrid president opened initial talks with Mourinho’s representatives, testing the waters for a reunion that once seemed unthinkable.
From there, the conversations have gathered pace. What began as a tentative sounding-out has developed into advanced negotiations, pushing Mourinho to the edge of one of the most high-profile comebacks in recent coaching history.
For now, Mourinho remains officially in charge of Benfica, where he signed a two-year deal last September. His public stance has been to keep the focus on the pitch, at least until the final whistle of their season.
“There's a match against Estoril, and from Monday onwards I'll be able to answer questions about my future as a coach and Benfica's future,” he told the media this week, batting away speculation with a familiar blend of control and calculation.
Saturday’s clash with Estoril Praia is Benfica’s last game of the campaign. Once it is out of the way, the questions he has been deflecting will land with full force.
A second act at the Bernabeu
Mourinho’s first tenure at Real Madrid, from 2010 to 2013, left a mark that still divides opinion but cannot be ignored. He arrived to challenge the dominance of Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona and did exactly that, dragging Madrid into a ferocious era of rivalry and intensity.
Under his watch, Real Madrid won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, piling up points and trophies while turning every Clásico into a global event. The football was ruthless, the atmosphere combustible, the standards sky-high.
Now, with Perez again turning to the Portuguese coach, Real Madrid appear ready to embrace that edge once more. The question is not whether Mourinho can handle the Bernabeu. It is what version of Real Madrid he will try to build this time.
