Hugo Ekitike Urges Ibrahima Konate to Sign Contract
Hugo Ekitike has stepped into the Ibrahima Konate contract saga with a simple, pointed message that cuts through the noise: sign.
As uncertainty swirls around Konate’s future at Liverpool, the striker took to Instagram to publicly nudge his teammate, replying “signe frere” – “sign brother” – under a post that had already become a magnet for anxious Liverpool supporters.
A public plea in the comments
Konate had shared a photo of himself arriving for France duty ahead of the World Cup, a reminder of the level he operates at and the stage he belongs on. He was supposed to be there alongside Ekitike, until a serious Achilles injury ruled the forward out and altered his season.
Liverpool fans flooded the comments, not with World Cup talk, but with one recurring plea: stay at Anfield. Ekitike joined in, echoing their sentiment in the language of the dressing room, the kind of message that feels less like a joke and more like a challenge between friends.
The timing is no coincidence. Contract talks that once sounded close to completion have stalled. The expectation now is stark: Konate is on course to leave Liverpool on a free transfer this summer.
From “big chance I’m here” to brink of exit
Not long ago, Konate himself sounded optimistic. Speaking at the Hill Dickinson Stadium after helping Liverpool beat Everton, the centre-back laid out a future that seemed firmly rooted on Merseyside.
“For sure, there is a big chance I’m here next season,” he said. “This is what I always wanted. I’m waiting to sort the contract, but when everything is sorted, you will have to ask Richard (Hughes) what I said to him in September, November and he’s going to say something to make everyone quiet.”
He repeated the point, almost daring the club’s sporting director to reveal the full story once the paperwork was done.
“When everything's going to be sorted, I wish you had a discussion with Richard (Hughes) and asked what I said to him a few months ago, before everyone talked about everything. When he’s going to reply, you will see. I just wish that.”
Those words now hang in the air. The deal was never signed. The certainty has drained away, replaced by the cold reality of a looming free transfer.
A leader on the move?
Konate has not spoken like a man with one foot out of the door. He has spoken like a leader. Like someone who saw himself at the heart of Liverpool’s next version under Arne Slot.
“I think I'm a leader already for this team, for the younger players, and for everyone to be fair,” he said, aware that this summer will strip away some of the established figures in the dressing room.
“We know this is part of the football life. The legends are going to leave one day and after, it's going to be our turn to take the lead. I started this already and it's a big responsibility.
“We start and we play football to have this kind of chance and to make sure everything is fine for this amazing club. But I need the help of everyone as well.”
That is the voice of a player ready to carry a club forward. Yet the club may now watch him walk away.
Five years in, Europe waits
Signed from RB Leipzig in 2021, Konate has spent five years at Anfield, growing from raw prospect into one of Europe’s most coveted central defenders. On a free transfer, he will be one of the most attractive players on the market.
He will not lack suitors. Real Madrid and PSG have already been linked, clubs with the resources and ambition to match his trajectory.
Liverpool, meanwhile, stand at a crossroads. A new head coach in Arne Slot, a reshaping squad, and a defender who believes he is ready to lead – but has yet to put pen to paper.
In the middle of it all, one line from a teammate cuts through the speculation, the negotiations and the silence.
“Sign brother.”
Whether Konate listens could shape far more than just his own summer.
